Have mercy, God, according to your gracious love, according to your unlimited compassion, erase my transgressions. | 1For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. |
Wash me from my iniquity, cleanse me from my sin. | 2Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. |
For I acknowledge my transgression; my sin remains continuously before me. | 3For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. |
Against you, you only, have I sinned, and done what was evil in your sight. As a result, you are just in your pronouncement and clear in your judgment. | 4Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. |
Indeed, in iniquity I was brought forth; in sin my mother conceived me. | 5Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. |
Indeed, you are pleased with truth in the inner person, and you will teach me wisdom in my innermost parts. | 6Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. |
Purge me with hyssop, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. | 7Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. |
Let me know joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. | 8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. |
Hide your countenance from my sins and erase the record of my iniquities. | 9Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. |
God, create a pure heart in me, and renew a right attitude within me. | 10Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. |
Do not cast me from your presence; do not take your Holy Spirit from me. | 11Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. |
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and let a willing attitude control me. | 12Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. |
Then I will teach transgressors about your ways, and sinners will turn to you. | 13Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. |
Deliver me from the guilt of shedding blood, God, God of my salvation. Then my tongue will sing about your righteousness. | 14Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. |
Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. | 15Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. |
Indeed, you do not delight in sacrifices, or I would give them, nor do you desire burnt offerings. | 16You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. |
True sacrifice to God is a broken spirit. A broken and chastened heart, God, you will not despise. | 17My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. |
Show favor to Zion in your good pleasure; and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. | 18May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. |
Then you will be pleased with right sacrifices, with burnt offerings, and with whole burnt offerings. Then they will offer bulls on your altar. | 19Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar. |
