To: Timothy, my dear child. May grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Messiah Jesus our Lord be yours! | 2to Timothy, my dear child. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord! |
I constantly thank my God—whom I serve with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did—when I remember you in my prayers night and day, | 3I am thankful to God, whom I have served with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, when I remember you in my prayers as I do constantly night and day. |
recalling your tears and longing to see you so that I can be filled with joy. | 4As I remember your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. |
I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first existed in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that this faith also exists in you. | 5I recall your sincere faith that was alive first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am sure is in you. |
For this reason, I am reminding you to fan into flames the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands. | 6Because of this I remind you to rekindle God's gift that you possess through the laying on of my hands. |
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity but one of power, love, and self-discipline. | 7For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control. |
Therefore, never be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me, his prisoner. Instead, by God's power, join me in suffering for the sake of the gospel. | 8So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me, a prisoner for his sake, but by God's power accept your share of suffering for the gospel. |
He saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our own accomplishments, but according to his own purpose and the grace that was given to us in the Messiah Jesus before time began. | 9He is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not based on our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began, |

He has broken the power of death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel! |

That is why I suffer as I do. However, I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I'm convinced that he is able to protect what he has entrusted to me until the day that he comes. | 12Because of this, in fact, I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one in whom my faith is set and I am convinced that he is able to protect what has been entrusted to me until that day. |
Hold on to the pattern of healthy teachings that you have heard from me, along with the faith and love that are in the Messiah Jesus. | 13Hold to the standard of sound words that you heard from me and do so with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. |
With the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us, protect the good treasure that has been entrusted to you. | 14Protect that good thing entrusted to you, through the Holy Spirit who lives within us. |
You know that everyone in Asia has abandoned me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. | 15You know that everyone in the province of Asia deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. |
May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, for he often took care of me and was not ashamed that I was a prisoner. | 16May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my imprisonment. |
Instead, when he arrived in Rome he searched diligently for me and found me. | 17But when he arrived in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me. |
May the Lord grant that he finds mercy on the day he comes again. You know very well how much he assisted me in Ephesus. | 18May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day! And you know very well all the ways he served me in Ephesus. |
