| 1Therefore, since the Messiah suffered in a mortal body, you, too, must arm yourselves with the same determination, because the person who has suffered in a mortal body has stopped sinning, | 1So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin, |
| 2so that he can live the rest of his mortal life guided, not by human desires, but by the will of God. | 2in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires. |
| 3For you spent enough time in the past doing what the gentiles like to do, living in sensuality, sinful desires, drunkenness, wild celebrations, drinking parties, and detestable idolatry. | 3For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries. |
| 4They insult you now because they are surprised that you are no longer joining them in the same excesses of wild living. | 4So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you. |
| 5They will give an account to the one who is ready to judge the living and the dead. | 5They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. |
| 6Indeed, this is why the gospel was proclaimed even to those who have died, so that they could be judged in their mortal flesh like all humans and live in the spiritual realm like God. | 6Now it was for this very purpose that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh by human standards they may live spiritually by God's standards. |
