You used to be dead because of your offenses and sins 1And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
that you once practiced as you lived according to the ways of this present world and according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now active in those who are disobedient.2Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Indeed, all of us once behaved like them in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of our flesh and senses. By nature we were destined for wrath, just like everyone else. 3Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love for us4But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
even when we were dead because of our offenses, made us alive together with the Messiah (by grace you have been saved), 5Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavenly realm in the Messiah Jesus, 6And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
so that in the coming ages he might display the limitless riches of his grace that comes to us through his kindness in the Messiah Jesus. 7That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
For by such grace you have been saved through faith. This does not come from you; it is the gift of God 8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
and not the result of actions, to put a stop to all boasting.9Not of works, lest any man should boast.
For we are God's masterpiece, created in the Messiah Jesus to perform good actions that God prepared long ago to be our way of life. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
So then, remember that at one time you gentiles by birth were called "the uncircumcised" by those who called themselves "the circumcised." They underwent physical circumcision done by human hands. 11Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from citizenship in Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise. You had no hope and were in the world without God. 12That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
But now, in union with the Messiah Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah. 13But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
For it is he who is our peace. Through his mortality he made both groups one by tearing down the wall of hostility that divided them.14For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
He rendered the Law inoperative, along with its commandments and regulations, thus creating in himself one new humanity from the two, thereby making peace, 15Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
and reconciling both groups to God in one body through the cross, on which he eliminated the hostility. 16And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
He came and proclaimed peace for you who were far away and for you who were near. 17And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.
For through him, both of us have access to the Father by one Spirit. 18For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
That is why you are no longer strangers and foreigners but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God's household, 19Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, the Messiah Jesus himself being the cornerstone.20And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
In union with him the whole building is joined together and rises into a holy sanctuary for the Lord. 21In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
You, too, are being built in him, along with the others, into a place for God's Spirit to dwell.22In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
