Holman Christian Standard BibleNew International Version
My son, don't forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commands; 1My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will bring you many days, a full life, and well-being. 2for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.
Never let loyalty and faithfulness leave you. Tie them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. 3Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will find favor and high regard in the sight of God and man. 4Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; 5Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths. 6in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Don't consider yourself to be wise; fear the LORD and turn away from evil. 7Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
This will be healing for your body and strengthening for your bones. 8This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor the LORD with your possessions and with the first produce of your entire harvest; 9Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
then your barns will be completely filled, and your vats will overflow with new wine. 10then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
Do not despise the LORD's instruction, my son, and do not loathe His discipline; 11My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline, and do not resent his rebuke,
for the LORD disciplines the one He loves, just as a father, the son he delights in. 12because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Happy is a man who finds wisdom and who acquires understanding, 13Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding,
for she is more profitable than silver, and her revenue is better than gold. 14for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than jewels; nothing you desire compares with her. 15She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand; in her left, riches and honor. 16Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant, and all her paths, peaceful. 17Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who embrace her, and those who hold on to her are happy. 18She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.
The LORD founded the earth by wisdom and established the heavens by understanding. 19By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
By His knowledge the watery depths broke open, and the clouds dripped with dew. 20by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
Maintain your competence and discretion. My son, don't lose sight of them. 21My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion;
They will be life for you and adornment for your neck. 22they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
Then you will go safely on your way; your foot will not stumble. 23Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; you will lie down, and your sleep will be pleasant. 24When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Don't fear sudden danger or the ruin of the wicked when it comes, 25Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from a snare. 26for the LORD will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.
When it is in your power, don't withhold good from the one it belongs to. 27Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.
Don't say to your neighbor, "Go away! Come back later. I'll give it tomorrow"--when it is there with you. 28Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back tomorrow and I'll give it to you"-- when you already have it with you.
Don't plan any harm against your neighbor, for he trusts you and lives near you. 29Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you.
Don't accuse anyone without cause, when he has done you no harm. 30Do not accuse anyone for no reason-- when they have done you no harm.
Don't envy a violent man or choose any of his ways; 31Do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways.
for the devious are detestable to the LORD, but He is a friend to the upright. 32For the LORD detests the perverse but takes the upright into his confidence.
The LORD's curse is on the household of the wicked, but He blesses the home of the righteous; 33The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
He mocks those who mock, but gives grace to the humble. 34He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.
The wise will inherit honor, but He holds up fools to dishonor. 35The wise inherit honor, but fools get only shame.
