Holman Christian Standard Bible | New International Version |
Finally, brothers, pray for us that the Lord's message may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you, | 1As for other matters, brothers and sisters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. |
and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not all have faith. | 2And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people, for not everyone has faith. |
But the Lord is faithful; He will strengthen and guard you from the evil one. | 3But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. |
We have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do what we command. | 4We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. |
May the Lord direct your hearts to God's love and Christ's endurance. | 5May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance. |
Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from every brother who walks irresponsibly and not according to the tradition received from us. | 6In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. |
For you yourselves know how you must imitate us: We were not irresponsible among you; | 7For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, |
we did not eat anyone's food free of charge; instead, we labored and struggled, working night and day, so that we would not be a burden to any of you. | 8nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. |
It is not that we don't have the right to support, but we did it to make ourselves an example to you so that you would imitate us. | 9We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. |
In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you: "If anyone isn't willing to work, he should not eat." | 10For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat." |
For we hear that there are some among you who walk irresponsibly, not working at all, but interfering with the work of others. | 11We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. |
Now we command and exhort such people by the Lord Jesus Christ that quietly working, they may eat their own food. | 12Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat. |
Brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. | 13And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good. |
And if anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take note of that person; don't associate with him, so that he may be ashamed. | 14Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed. |
Yet don't treat him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. | 15Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer. |
May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with all of you. | 16Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. |
This greeting is in my own hand--Paul. This is a sign in every letter; this is how I write. | 17I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand, which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write. |
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. | 18The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. |
