Holman Christian Standard Bible | Berean Study Bible |
Finally, brothers, pray for us that the Lord's message may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you, | 1Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may spread quickly and be held in honor, just as it was with you. |
and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not all have faith. | 2And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men; for not everyone holds to the faith. |
But the Lord is faithful; He will strengthen and guard you from the evil one. | 3But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. |
We have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do what we command. | 4And we have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do what we command. |
May the Lord direct your hearts to God's love and Christ's endurance. | 5May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. |
Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from every brother who walks irresponsibly and not according to the tradition received from us. | 6Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from any brother who leads an undisciplined life that is not in keeping with the tradition you received from us. |
For you yourselves know how you must imitate us: We were not irresponsible among you; | 7For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not undisciplined among you, |
we did not eat anyone's food free of charge; instead, we labored and struggled, working night and day, so that we would not be a burden to any of you. | 8nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. Instead, in labor and toil, we worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you. |
It is not that we don't have the right to support, but we did it to make ourselves an example to you so that you would imitate us. | 9Not that we lack this right, but we wanted to offer ourselves as an example for you to imitate. |
In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you: "If anyone isn't willing to work, he should not eat." | 10For even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “If anyone is unwilling to work, he shall not eat.” |
For we hear that there are some among you who walk irresponsibly, not working at all, but interfering with the work of others. | 11Yet we hear that some of you are leading undisciplined lives and accomplishing nothing but being busybodies. |
Now we command and exhort such people by the Lord Jesus Christ that quietly working, they may eat their own food. | 12We command and urge such people by our Lord Jesus Christ to begin working quietly to earn their own living. |
Brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. | 13But as for you, brothers, do not grow weary in well-doing. |
And if anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take note of that person; don't associate with him, so that he may be ashamed. | 14Take note of anyone who does not obey the instructions we have given in this letter. Do not associate with him, so that he may be ashamed. |
Yet don't treat him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. | 15Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. |
May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with all of you. | 16Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. |
This greeting is in my own hand--Paul. This is a sign in every letter; this is how I write. | 17This greeting is in my own hand—Paul. This is my mark in every letter; it is the way I write. |
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. | 18The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. |
