Holman Christian Standard BibleNew International Version
Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to Him: We ask you, brothers, 1Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters,
not to be easily upset in mind or troubled, either by a spirit or by a message or by a letter as if from us, alleging that the Day of the Lord has come.2not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us--whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter--asserting that the day of the Lord has already come.
Don't let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction. 3Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God's sanctuary, publicizing that he himself is God. 4He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
Don't you remember that when I was still with you I told you about this? 5Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things?
And you know what currently restrains him, so that he will be revealed in his time.6And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time.
For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one now restraining will do so until he is out of the way, 7For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.
and then the lawless one will be revealed. The Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of His mouth and will bring him to nothing with the brightness of His coming. 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming.
The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan's working, with all kinds of false miracles, signs, and wonders,9The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie,
and with every unrighteous deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth in order to be saved.10and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe what is false, 11For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie
so that all will be condemned--those who did not believe the truth but enjoyed unrighteousness. 12and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
But we must always thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 13But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.
He called you to this through our gospel, so that you might obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 14He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught, either by our message or by our letter. 15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, 16May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope,
encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word. 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.
