He wraps Himself in light as if it were a robe, spreading out the sky like a canopy, | 2He covers himself with light as if it were a garment. He stretches out the skies like a tent curtain, |
laying the beams of His palace on the waters above, making the clouds His chariot, walking on the wings of the wind, | 3and lays the beams of the upper rooms of his palace on the rain clouds. He makes the clouds his chariot, and travels along on the wings of the wind. |
and making the winds His messengers, flames of fire His servants. | 4He makes the winds his messengers, and the flaming fire his attendant. |
He established the earth on its foundations; it will never be shaken. | 5He established the earth on its foundations; it will never be upended. |
You covered it with the deep as if it were a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. | 6The watery deep covered it like a garment; the waters reached above the mountains. |
At Your rebuke the waters fled; at the sound of Your thunder they hurried away-- | 7Your shout made the waters retreat; at the sound of your thunderous voice they hurried off-- |
mountains rose and valleys sank-- to the place You established for them. | 8as the mountains rose up, and the valleys went down--to the place you appointed for them. |
You set a boundary they cannot cross; they will never cover the earth again. | 9You set up a boundary for them that they could not cross, so that they would not cover the earth again. |
He causes the springs to gush into the valleys; they flow between the mountains. | 10He turns springs into streams; they flow between the mountains. |
They supply water for every wild beast; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. | 11They provide water for all the animals in the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. |
The birds of the sky live beside the springs; they sing among the foliage. | 12The birds of the sky live beside them; they chirp among the bushes. |
He waters the mountains from His palace; the earth is satisfied by the fruit of Your labor. | 13He waters the mountains from the upper rooms of his palace; the earth is full of the fruit you cause to grow. |
He causes grass to grow for the livestock and provides crops for man to cultivate, producing food from the earth, | 14He provides grass for the cattle, and crops for people to cultivate, so they can produce food from the ground, |
wine that makes man's heart glad-- making his face shine with oil-- and bread that sustains man's heart. | 15as well as wine that makes people feel so good, and so they can have oil to make their faces shine, as well as food that sustains people's lives. |
The trees of the LORD flourish, the cedars of Lebanon that He planted. | 16The trees of the LORD receive all the rain they need, the cedars of Lebanon which he planted, |
There the birds make their nests; the stork makes its home in the pine trees. | 17where the birds make nests, near the evergreens in which the herons live. |
The high mountains are for the wild goats; the cliffs are a refuge for hyraxes. | 18The wild goats live in the high mountains; the rock badgers find safety in the cliffs. |
He made the moon to mark the festivals; the sun knows when to set. | 19He made the moon to mark the months, and the sun sets according to a regular schedule. |
You bring darkness, and it becomes night, when all the forest animals stir. | 20You make it dark and night comes, during which all the beasts of the forest prowl around. |
The young lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God. | 21The lions roar for prey, seeking their food from God. |
The sun rises; they go back and lie down in their dens. | 22When the sun rises, they withdraw and sleep in their dens. |
Man goes out to his work and to his labor until evening. | 23Men then go out to do their work, and labor away until evening. |
How countless are Your works, LORD! In wisdom You have made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures. | 24How many living things you have made, O LORD! You have exhibited great skill in making all of them; the earth is full of the living things you have made. |
Here is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures beyond number-- living things both large and small. | 25Over here is the deep, wide sea, which teems with innumerable swimming creatures, living things both small and large. |
There the ships move about, and Leviathan, which You formed to play there. | 26The ships travel there, and over here swims the whale you made to play in it. |
All of them wait for You to give them their food at the right time. | 27All of your creatures wait for you to provide them with food on a regular basis. |
When You give it to them, they gather it; when You open Your hand, they are satisfied with good things. | 28You give food to them and they receive it; you open your hand and they are filled with food. |
When You hide Your face, they are terrified; when You take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. | 29When you ignore them, they panic. When you take away their life's breath, they die and return to dust. |
When You send Your breath, they are created, and You renew the face of the earth. | 30When you send your life-giving breath, they are created, and you replenish the surface of the ground. |
May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in His works. | 31May the splendor of the LORD endure! May the LORD find pleasure in the living things he has made! |
He looks at the earth, and it trembles; He touches the mountains, and they pour out smoke. | 32He looks down on the earth and it shakes; he touches the mountains and they start to smolder. |
I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God while I live. | 33I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God as long as I exist! |
May my meditation be pleasing to Him; I will rejoice in the LORD. | 34May my thoughts be pleasing to him! I will rejoice in the LORD. |
May sinners vanish from the earth and wicked people be no more. My soul, praise Yahweh! Hallelujah! | 35May sinners disappear from the earth, and the wicked vanish! Praise the LORD, O my soul! Praise the LORD! |
