| 1An oracle against Tyre: Wail, ships of Tarshish, for your haven has been destroyed. Word has reached them from the land of Cyprus. | 1Here is a message about Tyre: Wail, you large ships, for the port is too devastated to enter! From the land of Cyprus this news is announced to them. |
| 2Mourn, inhabitants of the coastland, you merchants of Sidon; your agents have crossed the sea | 2Lament, you residents of the coast, you merchants of Sidon who travel over the sea, whose agents sail over |
| 3on many waters. Tyre's revenue was the grain from Shihor-- the harvest of the Nile. She was the merchant among the nations. | 3the deep waters! Grain from the Shihor region, crops grown near the Nile she receives; she is the trade center of the nations. |
| 4Be ashamed Sidon, the stronghold of the sea, for the sea has spoken:" I have not been in labor or given birth. I have not raised young men or brought up young women." | 4Be ashamed, O Sidon, for the sea says this, O fortress of the sea: "I have not gone into labor or given birth; I have not raised young men or brought up young women." |

| 6Cross over to Tarshish; wail, inhabitants of the coastland! | 6Travel to Tarshish! Wail, you residents of the coast! |
| 7Is this your jubilant city, whose origin was in ancient times, whose feet have taken her to settle far away? | 7Is this really your boisterous city whose origins are in the distant past, and whose feet led her to a distant land to reside? |
| 8Who planned this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, whose traders are princes, whose merchants are the honored ones of the earth? | 8Who planned this for royal Tyre, whose merchants are princes, whose traders are the dignitaries of the earth? |
| 9The LORD of Hosts planned it, to desecrate all its glorious beauty, to disgrace all the honored ones of the earth. | 9The LORD who commands armies planned it--to dishonor the pride that comes from all her beauty, to humiliate all the dignitaries of the earth. |
| 10Overflow your land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish; there is no longer anything to restrain you. | 10Daughter Tarshish, travel back to your land, as one crosses the Nile; there is no longer any marketplace in Tyre. |
| 11He stretched out His hand over the sea; He made kingdoms tremble. The LORD has commanded that the Canaanite fortresses be destroyed. | 11The LORD stretched out his hand over the sea, he shook kingdoms; he gave the order to destroy Canaan's fortresses. |
| 12He said," You will not rejoice anymore, ravished young woman, daughter of Sidon. Get up and cross over to Cyprus-- even there you will have no rest!" | 12He said, "You will no longer celebrate, oppressed virgin daughter Sidon! Get up, travel to Cyprus, but you will find no relief there." |
| 13Look at the land of the Chaldeans-- a people who no longer exist. Assyria destined it for desert creatures. They set up their siege towers and stripped its palaces. They made it a ruin. | 13Look at the land of the Chaldeans, these people who have lost their identity! The Assyrians have made it a home for wild animals. They erected their siege towers, demolished its fortresses, and turned it into a heap of ruins. |
| 14Wail, ships of Tarshish, because your fortress is destroyed! | 14Wail, you large ships, for your fortress is destroyed! |
| 15On that day Tyre will be forgotten for 70 years--the life span of one king. At the end of 70 years, what the song says about the prostitute will happen to Tyre: | 15At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, the typical life span of a king. At the end of seventy years Tyre will try to attract attention again, like the prostitute in the popular song: |
| 16Pick up your lyre, stroll through the city, prostitute forgotten by men. Play skillfully, sing many a song, and you will be thought of again. | 16"Take the harp, go through the city, forgotten prostitute! Play it well, play lots of songs, so you'll be noticed!" |
| 17And at the end of the 70 years, the LORD will restore Tyre and she will go back into business, prostituting herself with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth. | 17At the end of seventy years the LORD will revive Tyre. She will start making money again by selling her services to all the earth's kingdoms. |
| 18But her profits and wages will be dedicated to the LORD. They will not be stored or saved, for her profit will go to those who live in the LORD's presence, to provide them with ample food and sacred clothing. | 18Her profits and earnings will be set apart for the LORD. They will not be stored up or accumulated, for her profits will be given to those who live in the LORD's presence and will be used to purchase large quantities of food and beautiful clothes. |
