Then after 14 years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also. | 1Then after an interval of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also. |
I went up according to a revelation and presented to them the gospel I preach among the Gentiles--but privately to those recognized as leaders--so that I might not be running, or have run the race, in vain. | 2It was because of a revelation that I went up; and I submitted to them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain. |
But not even Titus who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. | 3But not even Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. |
This issue arose because of false brothers smuggled in, who came in secretly to spy on the freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, in order to enslave us. | 4But it was because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage. |
But we did not give up and submit to these people for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would be preserved for you. | 5But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you. |
Now from those recognized as important (what they really were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism)--they added nothing to me. | 6But from those who were of high reputation (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)-- well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me. |
On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised, just as Peter was for the circumcised, | 7But on the contrary, seeing that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised |
since the One at work in Peter for an apostleship to the circumcised was also at work in me for the Gentiles. | 8(for He who effectually worked for Peter in his apostleship to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles), |
When James, Cephas, and John, recognized as pillars, acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to me and Barnabas, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. | 9and recognizing the grace that had been given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we might go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. |
They asked only that we would remember the poor, which I made every effort to do. | 10They only asked us to remember the poor-- the very thing I also was eager to do. |
But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face because he stood condemned. | 11But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. |
For he regularly ate with the Gentiles before certain men came from James. However, when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, because he feared those from the circumcision party. | 12For prior to the coming of certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision. |
Then the rest of the Jews joined his hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. | 13The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. |
But when I saw that they were deviating from the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas in front of everyone, "If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel Gentiles to live like Jews?" | 14But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews? |
We who are Jews by birth and not "Gentile sinners" | 15"We are Jews by nature and not sinners from among the Gentiles; |
know that no one is justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ. And we have believed in Christ Jesus so that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no human being will be justified. | 16nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified. |
But if we ourselves are also found to be "sinners" while seeking to be justified by Christ, is Christ then a promoter of sin? Absolutely not! | 17"But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? May it never be! |
If I rebuild the system I tore down, I show myself to be a lawbreaker. | 18"For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor. |
For through the law I have died to the law, so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ | 19"For through the Law I died to the Law, so that I might live to God. |
and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. | 20"I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. |
I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing. | 21"I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly." |
