Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! | 1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, and his loyal love endures! |
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble | 2Let those delivered by the LORD speak out, those whom he delivered from the power of the enemy, |
and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. | 3and gathered from foreign lands, from east and west, from north and south. |
Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; | 4They wandered through the wilderness on a desert road; they found no city in which to live. |
hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. | 5They were hungry and thirsty; they fainted from exhaustion. |
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | 6They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. |
He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. | 7He led them on a level road, that they might find a city in which to live. |
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! |
For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. | 9For he has satisfied those who thirst, and those who hunger he has filled with food. |
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, | 10They sat in utter darkness, bound in painful iron chains, |
for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. | 11because they had rebelled against God's commands, and rejected the instructions of the sovereign king. |
So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. | 12So he used suffering to humble them; they stumbled and no one helped them up. |
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | 13They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. |
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. | 14He brought them out of the utter darkness, and tore off their shackles. |
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! |
For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron. | 16For he shattered the bronze gates, and hacked through the iron bars. |
Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; | 17They acted like fools in their rebellious ways, and suffered because of their sins. |
they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. | 18They lost their appetite for all food, and they drew near the gates of death. |
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | 19They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. |
He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. | 20He sent them an assuring word and healed them; he rescued them from the pits where they were trapped. |
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! |
And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy! | 22Let them present thank offerings, and loudly proclaim what he has done! |
Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; | 23Some traveled on the sea in ships, and carried cargo over the vast waters. |
they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. | 24They witnessed the acts of the LORD, his amazing feats on the deep water. |
For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. | 25He gave the order for a windstorm, and it stirred up the waves of the sea. |
They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; | 26They reached up to the sky, then dropped into the depths. The sailors' strength left them because the danger was so great. |
they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end. | 27They swayed and staggered like a drunk, and all their skill proved ineffective. |
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | 28They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. |
He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. | 29He calmed the storm, and the waves grew silent. |
Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. | 30The sailors rejoiced because the waves grew quiet, and he led them to the harbor they desired. |
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! |
Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. | 32Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people! Let them praise him in the place where the leaders preside! |
He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, | 33He turned streams into a desert, springs of water into arid land, |
a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. | 34and a fruitful land into a barren place, because of the sin of its inhabitants. |
He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. | 35As for his people, he turned a desert into a pool of water, and a dry land into springs of water. |
And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; | 36He allowed the hungry to settle there, and they established a city in which to live. |
they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield. | 37They cultivated fields, and planted vineyards, which yielded a harvest of fruit. |
By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish. | 38He blessed them so that they became very numerous. He would not allow their cattle to decrease in number. |
When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow, | 39As for their enemies, they decreased in number and were beaten down, because of painful distress and suffering. |
he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; | 40He would pour contempt upon princes, and he made them wander in a wasteland with no road. |
but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. | 41Yet he protected the needy from oppression, and cared for his families like a flock of sheep. |
The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. | 42When the godly see this, they rejoice, and every sinner shuts his mouth. |
Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD. | 43Whoever is wise, let him take note of these things! Let them consider the LORD's acts of loyal love! |
