And you were dead in the trespasses and sins | 1You used to be dead because of your offenses and sins |
in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— | 2that you once practiced as you lived according to the ways of this present world and according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now active in those who are disobedient. |
among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. | 3Indeed, all of us once behaved like them in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of our flesh and senses. By nature we were destined for wrath, just like everyone else. |
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, | 4But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love for us |
even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— | 5even when we were dead because of our offenses, made us alive together with the Messiah (by grace you have been saved), |
and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, | 6raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavenly realm in the Messiah Jesus, |
so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. | 7so that in the coming ages he might display the limitless riches of his grace that comes to us through his kindness in the Messiah Jesus. |
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, | 8For by such grace you have been saved through faith. This does not come from you; it is the gift of God |
not a result of works, so that no one may boast. | 9and not the result of actions, to put a stop to all boasting. |
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. | 10For we are God's masterpiece, created in the Messiah Jesus to perform good actions that God prepared long ago to be our way of life. |
Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— | 11So then, remember that at one time you gentiles by birth were called "the uncircumcised" by those who called themselves "the circumcised." They underwent physical circumcision done by human hands. |
remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. | 12At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from citizenship in Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise. You had no hope and were in the world without God. |
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. | 13But now, in union with the Messiah Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah. |
For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility | 14For it is he who is our peace. Through his mortality he made both groups one by tearing down the wall of hostility that divided them. |
by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, | 15He rendered the Law inoperative, along with its commandments and regulations, thus creating in himself one new humanity from the two, thereby making peace, |
and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. | 16and reconciling both groups to God in one body through the cross, on which he eliminated the hostility. |
And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. | 17He came and proclaimed peace for you who were far away and for you who were near. |
For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. | 18For through him, both of us have access to the Father by one Spirit. |
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, | 19That is why you are no longer strangers and foreigners but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God's household, |
built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, | 20having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, the Messiah Jesus himself being the cornerstone. |
in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. | 21In union with him the whole building is joined together and rises into a holy sanctuary for the Lord. |
In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. | 22You, too, are being built in him, along with the others, into a place for God's Spirit to dwell. |
