These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: | 1These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; each came with his family: |
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, | 2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; |
Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, | 3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; |
Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. | 4Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher. |
All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. | 5The total number of Jacob's descendants was seventy; Joseph was already in Egypt. |
Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. | 6Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation eventually died. |
But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them. | 7But the Israelites were fruitful, increased rapidly, multiplied, and became extremely numerous so that the land was filled with them. |
Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. | 8A new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power in Egypt. |
And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. | 9He said to his people, "Look, the Israelite people are more numerous and powerful than we are. |
Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” | 10Come, let's deal shrewdly with them; otherwise they will multiply further, and when war breaks out, they will join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country." |
Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses. | 11So the Egyptians assigned taskmasters over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor. They built Pithom and Rameses as supply cities for Pharaoh. |
But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. | 12But the more they oppressed them, the more they multiplied and spread so that the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites. |
So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves | 13They worked the Israelites ruthlessly |
and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves. | 14and made their lives bitter with difficult labor in brick and mortar and in all kinds of fieldwork. They ruthlessly imposed all this work on them. |
Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, | 15The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives--the first whose name was Shiphrah and the second whose name was Puah-- |
“When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” | 16"When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them as they deliver. If the child is a son, kill him, but if it's a daughter, she may live." |
But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. | 17The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live. |
So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” | 18So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, "Why have you done this and let the boys live?" |
The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” | 19The midwives said to Pharaoh, "The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife can get to them." |
So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. | 20So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very numerous. |
And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. | 21Since the midwives feared God, he gave them families. |
Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.” | 22Pharaoh then commanded all his people: "You must throw every son born to the Hebrews into the Nile, but let every daughter live." |
