Berean Study Bible | New Living Translation |
One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields, and His disciples began to pick the heads of grain, rub them in their hands, and eat them. | 1One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the husks in their hands, and ate the grain. |
But some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” | 2But some Pharisees said, “Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?” |
Jesus replied, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? | 3Jesus replied, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? |
He entered the house of God, took the consecrated bread and gave it to his companions, and ate what is lawful only for the priests to eat.” | 4 He went into the house of God and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests can eat. He also gave some to his companions.” |
Then Jesus declared, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” | 5And Jesus added, “The Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath.” Jesus Heals on the Sabbath |
On another Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. | 6On another Sabbath day, a man with a deformed right hand was in the synagogue while Jesus was teaching. |
Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He would heal on the Sabbath. | 7The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely. If he healed the man’s hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath. |
But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and stand among us.” So he got up and stood there. | 8But Jesus knew their thoughts. He said to the man with the deformed hand, “Come and stand in front of everyone.” So the man came forward. |
Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” | 9Then Jesus said to his critics, “I have a question for you. Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?” |
And after looking around at all of them, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and it was restored. | 10He looked around at them one by one and then said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored! |
But the scribes and Pharisees were filled with rage and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. | 11At this, the enemies of Jesus were wild with rage and began to discuss what to do with him. Jesus Chooses the Twelve Apostles |
In those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and He spent the night in prayer to God. | 12One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night. |
When daylight came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also designated as apostles: | 13At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles. Here are their names: |
Simon, whom He named Peter, and his brother Andrew; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; | 14Simon (whom he named Peter), Andrew (Peter’s brother), James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, |
Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alphaeus and Simon called the Zealot; | 15Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (who was called the zealot), |
Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. | 16Judas (son of James), Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him). Crowds Follow Jesus |
Then Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of His disciples was there, along with a great number of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon. | 17When they came down from the mountain, the disciples stood with Jesus on a large, level area, surrounded by many of his followers and by the crowds. There were people from all over Judea and from Jerusalem and from as far north as the seacoasts of Tyre and Sidon. |
They had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases, and those troubled by unclean spirits were healed. | 18They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those troubled by evil spirits were healed. |
The entire crowd was trying to touch Him, because power was coming from Him and healing them all. | 19Everyone tried to touch him, because healing power went out from him, and he healed everyone. The Beatitudes |
Looking up at His disciples, Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. | 20Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said, “God blesses you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours. |
Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. | 21 God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh. |
Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man. | 22 What blessings await you when people hate you and exclude you and mock you and curse you as evil because you follow the Son of Man. |
Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For their fathers treated the prophets in the same way. | 23 When that happens, be happy! Yes, leap for joy! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, their ancestors treated the ancient prophets that same way. Sorrows Foretold |
But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. | 24 “What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now. |
Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. | 25 What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now, for a time of awful hunger awaits you. What sorrow awaits you who laugh now, for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow. |
Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers treated the false prophets in the same way. | 26 What sorrow awaits you who are praised by the crowds, for their ancestors also praised false prophets. Love for Enemies |
But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, | 27 “But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. |
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. | 28 Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. |
If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well. | 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also. |
Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not demand it back. | 30 Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back. |
Do to others as you would have them do to you. | 31 Do to others as you would like them to do to you. |
If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. | 32 “If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them! |
If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. | 33 And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much! |
And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. | 34 And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other sinners for a full return. |
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. | 35 “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. |
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. | 36 You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate. Do Not Judge Others |
Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. | 37 “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven. |
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” | 38 Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. ” |
Jesus also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? | 39Then Jesus gave the following illustration: “Can one blind person lead another? Won’t they both fall into a ditch? |
A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. | 40 Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher. |
Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to notice the beam in your own eye? | 41 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? |
How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while you yourself fail to see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. | 42 How can you think of saying, ‘Friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye. The Tree and Its Fruit |
No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. | 43 “A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. |
For each tree is known by its own fruit. Indeed, figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor grapes from brambles. | 44 A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes. |
The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. | 45 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. Building on a Solid Foundation |
Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I say? | 46 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? |
I will show you what he is like who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them: | 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. |
He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the torrent crashed against that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. | 48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. |
But the one who hears My words and does not act on them is like a man who built his house on ground without a foundation. The torrent crashed against that house, and immediately it fell—and great was its destruction!” | 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” |
