| 1This is what the LORD says to Cyrus His anointed, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him, to disarm kings, to open the doors before him, so that the gates will not be shut: | 1This is what the LORD says to his chosen one, to Cyrus, whose right hand I hold in order to subdue nations before him, and disarm kings, to open doors before him, so gates remain unclosed: |
| 2“I will go before you and level the mountains; I will break down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron. | 2"I will go before you and level mountains. Bronze doors I will shatter and iron bars I will hack through. |
| 3I will give you the treasures of darkness and the riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by name. | 3I will give you hidden treasures, riches stashed away in secret places, so you may recognize that I am the LORD, the one who calls you by name, the God of Israel. |
| 4For the sake of Jacob My servant and Israel My chosen one, I call you by name; I have given you a title of honor, though you have not known Me. | 4For the sake of my servant Jacob, Israel, my chosen one, I call you by name and give you a title of respect, even though you do not recognize me. |
| 5I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God but Me. I will equip you for battle, though you have not known Me, | 5I am the LORD, I have no peer, there is no God but me. I arm you for battle, even though you do not recognize me. |
| 6so that all may know, from where the sun rises to where it sets, that there is none but Me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. | 6I do this so people will recognize from east to west that there is no God but me; I am the LORD, I have no peer. |
| 7I form the light and create the darkness; I bring prosperity and create calamity. I, the LORD, do all these things. | 7I am the one who forms light and creates darkness; the one who brings about peace and creates calamity. I am the LORD, who accomplishes all these things. |
| 8Drip down, O heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Let the earth open up that salvation may sprout and righteousness spring up with it; I, the LORD, have created it. | 8O sky, rain down from above! Let the clouds send down showers of deliverance! Let the earth absorb it so salvation may grow, and deliverance may sprout up along with it. I, the LORD, create it. |
| 9Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker—one clay pot among many. Does the clay ask the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘He has no hands’? | 9One who argues with his creator is in grave danger, one who is like a mere shard among the other shards on the ground! The clay should not say to the potter, "What in the world are you doing? Your work lacks skill!" |
| 10Woe to him who says to his father, ‘What have you begotten?’ or to his mother, ‘What have you brought forth?’ ” | 10Danger awaits one who says to his father, "What in the world are you fathering?" and to his mother, "What in the world are you bringing forth?" |
| 11Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and its Maker: “How dare you question Me about My sons, or instruct Me in the work of My hands? | 11This is what the LORD says, the Holy One of Israel, the one who formed him, concerning things to come: "How dare you question me about my children! How dare you tell me what to do with the work of my own hands! |
| 12It is I who made the earth and created man upon it. It was My hands that stretched out the heavens, and I ordained all their host. | 12I made the earth, I created the people who live on it. It was me--my hands stretched out the sky, I give orders to all the heavenly lights. |
| 13I will raise up Cyrus in righteousness, and I will make all his ways straight. He will rebuild My city and set My exiles free, but not for payment or reward, says the LORD of Hosts.” | 13It is me--I stir him up and commission him; I will make all his ways level. He will rebuild my city; he will send my exiled people home, but not for a price or a bribe," says the LORD who commands armies. |
| 14This is what the LORD says: “The products of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush, along with the Sabeans, men of stature, will come over to you and will be yours; they will trudge behind you; they will come over in chains and bow down to you. They will confess to you: ‘God is indeed with you, and there is no other; there is no other God.’ ” | 14This is what the LORD says: "The profit of Egypt and the revenue of Ethiopia, along with the Sabeans, those tall men, will be brought to you and become yours. They will walk behind you, coming along in chains. They will bow down to you and pray to you: 'Truly God is with you; he has no peer; there is no other God!'" |
| 15Truly You are a God who hides Himself, O God of Israel, the Savior. | 15Yes, you are a God who keeps hidden, O God of Israel, deliverer! |
| 16They will all be put to shame and humiliated; the makers of idols will depart together in disgrace. | 16They will all be ashamed and embarrassed; those who fashion idols will all be humiliated. |
| 17But Israel will be saved by the LORD with an everlasting salvation; you will not be put to shame or humiliated, to ages everlasting. | 17Israel will be delivered once and for all by the LORD; you will never again be ashamed or humiliated. |
| 18For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens—He is God; He formed the earth and fashioned it; He established it; He did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited: “I am the LORD, and there is no other. | 18For this is what the LORD says, the one who created the sky--he is the true God, the one who formed the earth and made it; he established it, he did not create it without order, he formed it to be inhabited--"I am the LORD, I have no peer. |
| 19I have not spoken in secret, from a place in a land of darkness. I did not say to the descendants of Jacob, ‘Seek Me in a wasteland.’ I, the LORD, speak the truth; I say what is right. | 19I have not spoken in secret, in some hidden place. I did not tell Jacob's descendants, 'Seek me in vain!' I am the LORD, the one who speaks honestly, who makes reliable announcements. |
| 20Come, gather together, and draw near, you fugitives from the nations. Ignorant are those who carry idols of wood and pray to a god that cannot save. | 20Gather together and come! Approach together, you refugees from the nations! Those who carry wooden idols know nothing, those who pray to a god that cannot deliver. |
| 21Speak up and present your case—yes, let them take counsel together. Who foretold this long ago? Who announced it from ancient times? Was it not I, the LORD? There is no other God but Me, a righteous God and Savior; there is none but Me. | 21Tell me! Present the evidence! Let them consult with one another! Who predicted this in the past? Who announced it beforehand? Was it not I, the LORD? I have no peer, there is no God but me, a God who vindicates and delivers; there is none but me. |
| 22Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. | 22Turn to me so you can be delivered, all you who live in the earth's remote regions! For I am God, and I have no peer. |
| 23By Myself I have sworn; truth has gone out from My mouth, a word that will not be revoked: Every knee will bow before Me, every tongue will swear allegiance. | 23I solemnly make this oath--what I say is true and reliable: 'Surely every knee will bow to me, every tongue will solemnly affirm; |
| 24Surely they will say of Me, ‘In the LORD alone are righteousness and strength.’ ” All who rage against Him will come to Him and be put to shame. | 24they will say about me, "Yes, the LORD is a powerful deliverer."'" All who are angry at him will cower before him. |
| 25In the LORD all descendants of Israel will be justified and will exult. | 25All the descendants of Israel will be vindicated by the LORD and will boast in him. |
