At Iconium, Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue, where they spoke so well that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed.1The same thing happened in Iconium; they entered the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.
But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.2But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up and poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against the brothers.
So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who affirmed the message of His grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.3So they stayed there for some time and spoke boldly in reliance on the Lord, who testified to the message of His grace by granting that signs and wonders be performed through them.
The people of the city were divided. Some sided with the Jews, and others with the apostles.4But the people of the city were divided, some siding with the Jews and some with the apostles.
But when the Gentiles and Jews, together with their rulers, set out to mistreat and stone them,5When an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to assault and stone them,
they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding region,6they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian towns called Lystra and Derbe, and to the surrounding countryside.
where they continued to preach the gospel.7And there they kept evangelizing.
In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked.8In Lystra a man without strength in his feet, lame from birth, and who had never walked, sat
This man was listening to the words of Paul, who looked intently at him and saw that he had faith to be healed.9and heard Paul speaking. After observing him closely and seeing that he had faith to be healed,
In a loud voice Paul called out, “Stand up on your feet!” And the man jumped up and began to walk.10Paul said in a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet!" And he jumped up and started to walk around.
When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices in the Lycaonian language: “The gods have come down to us in human form!”11When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have come down to us in the form of men!"
Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.12And they started to call Barnabas, Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the main speaker.
The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates, hoping to offer a sacrifice along with the crowds.13Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the town, brought oxen and garlands to the gates. He, with the crowds, intended to offer sacrifice.
But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul found out about this, they tore their clothes and rushed into the crowd, shouting,14The apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their robes when they heard this and rushed into the crowd, shouting:"
“Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them.15Men! Why are you doing these things? We are men also, with the same nature as you, and we are proclaiming good news to you, that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them.
In past generations, He let all nations go their own way.16In past generations He allowed all the nations to go their own way,
Yet He has not left Himself without testimony to His goodness: He gives you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness.”17although He did not leave Himself without a witness, since He did what is good by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons and satisfying your hearts with food and happiness."
Even with these words, Paul and Barnabas could hardly stop the crowds from sacrificing to them.18Even though they said these things, they barely stopped the crowds from sacrificing to them.
Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and won over the crowds. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, presuming he was dead.19Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and when they had won over the crowds and stoned Paul, they dragged him out of the city, thinking he was dead.
But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. And the next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.20After the disciples surrounded him, he got up and went into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.
They preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch,21After they had evangelized that town and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, to Iconium, and to Antioch,
strengthening the souls of the disciples and encouraging them to continue in the faith. “We must endure many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.22strengthening the disciples by encouraging them to continue in the faith and by telling them, "It is necessary to pass through many troubles on our way into the kingdom of God."
Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church, praying and fasting as they entrusted them to the Lord, in whom they had believed.23When they had appointed elders in every church and prayed with fasting, they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.
After passing through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.24Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia.
And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.25After they spoke the message in Perga, they went down to Attalia.
From Attalia they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had just completed.26From there they sailed back to Antioch where they had been entrusted to the grace of God for the work they had now completed.
When they arrived, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them, and how He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.27After they arrived and gathered the church together, they reported everything God had done with them and that He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
And they spent a long time there with the disciples.28And they spent a considerable time with the disciples.
