Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who are called, loved by God the Father, and kept in Jesus Christ: | 1Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: |
Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. | 2May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. |
Beloved, although I made every effort to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt it necessary to write and urge you to contend earnestly for the faith entrusted once for all to the saints. | 3Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. |
For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—ungodly ones who were designated long ago for condemnation. They turn the grace of our God into a license for immorality, and they deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. | 4For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. |
Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you that after Jesus had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt, He destroyed those who did not believe. | 5Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. |
And the angels who did not stay within their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling—these He has kept in eternal chains under darkness, bound for judgment on that great day. | 6And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— |
In like manner, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, who indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, are on display as an example of those who sustain the punishment of eternal fire. | 7just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. |
Yet in the same way these dreamers defile their bodies, reject authority, and slander glorious beings. | 8Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones. |
But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed with the devil over the body of Moses, did not presume to bring a slanderous charge against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” | 9But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” |
These men, however, slander what they do not understand, and like irrational animals, they will be destroyed by the things they do instinctively. | 10But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. |
Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain; they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam; they have perished in Korah’s rebellion. | 11Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error and perished in Korah’s rebellion. |
These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts, shamelessly feasting with you but shepherding only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; fruitless trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted. | 12These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; |
They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever. | 13wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever. |
Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about them: “Behold, the Lord is coming with myriads of His holy ones | 14It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, |
to execute judgment on everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of every ungodly act of wickedness and every harsh word spoken against Him by ungodly sinners.” | 15to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” |
These men are discontented grumblers, following after their own lusts; their mouths spew arrogance; they flatter others for their own advantage. | 16These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage. |
But you, beloved, remember what was foretold by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ | 17But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
when they said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow after their own ungodly desires.” | 18They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” |
These are the ones who cause divisions, who are worldly and devoid of the Spirit. | 19It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. |
But you, beloved, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, | 20But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, |
keep yourselves in the love of God as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you eternal life. | 21keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. |
And indeed, have mercy on those who doubt; | 22And have mercy on those who doubt; |
save others by snatching them from the fire; and to still others show mercy tempered with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh. | 23save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh. |
Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished in His glorious presence, with great joy— | 24Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, |
to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord before all time, and now, and for all eternity. Amen. | 25to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. |
