1Paul and Timothy, bond-slaves of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus being in Philippi with the overseers (episkopos- look intently upon, bishops) and ministers (diakonois):
2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4Always in every heart-felt petition of me for all of you making heart-felt petition with joy, 5Upon your fellowship unto the gospel from the first day until now, 6Being confident (persuaded, latin-confidens) of this same that He who has begun a good work in you will complete (epiteleo, latin-perficiet, consummate) it until the day of Jesus Christ, 7Just as it is righteous (just) for me to think this about all of you, because I have you in my heart, in both my chains and in the defense (apologia) and confirmation of the gospel, you are all fellow-partakers with me of grace. 8For God is my witness how I long after you all in the gut-level emotions of Jesus Christ. 9And this I pray, so that your love will abound yet more and more in knowledge and all perception (sense-discernment, latin-sensu), 10Unto you to approve the things being excellent (that differ, that which carries through, surpasses, takes all the way through, distinguishing what differs), so that you may be pure (judged in the shining light, sincere because transparent, rightly judged because seen in full light) and not causing to stumble (not stumbling, blameless, not offending, not striking against) unto the day of Christ, 11Being filled with the fruit of righteousness that is through Jesus Christ unto the glory and praise of God. 12Now I resolutely want you to know, brothers, that the things concerning me have really (more, rather) turned out (come) unto the advancement (progress by chopping down whatever impedes-used of pioneers and armies clearing the way) of the gospel, 13So that my chains in Christ have become apparent in the whole governor’s residence and its guard (greek and latin- praetorium) and to all the rest, 14And most of the brothers in the Lord, trusting by my chains, are more abundantly daring (bold courage), fearlessly speaking the word of God. 15For some through envy (ill-will, spite, gudge, strong feeling that sours) and strife but some through goodwill (good pleasure, good favor) are preaching Christ. 16These from out of love, knowing that I am appointed (destined, laid, set) unto the defense of the gospel, 17However those from out of rivalrous self-interest (selfish ambition, self-seeking, rivalry) are preaching Christ, not of holy motives, supposing to raise up tribulation to my chains. 18What then? However so that in every place whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached. And in this I rejoice. But rather, and I will rejoice. 19For I know that this will turn out (come) unto my salvation (deliverance) through your heart-felt petition and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20According to my strained expectancy (thinking forward with head out-stretched) and hope, so that I will be ashamed in nothing, but rather in all boldness, as always, now also Christ will be magnified (made great) in my body whether through life or through death. 21For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22However if I am to live in flesh this is for me the fruit of work and what will I choose? I do not know! 23For I am pressed together from out of the two, having the passionate urge to depart unto and be with Christ, for it is much more better, 24However to remain on in the flesh is necessary for your sake. 25And having confidence of this, I know that I will abide and continue near you all unto your progress and joy of the faith, 26So that your boasting may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my coming (parousias, latin-adventum) again to you. 27Only conduct (live the life of a citizen) yourselves worthily (becoming, suitable because fitting) of the gospel of Christ, so that whether having come and having seen you or being absent, I may hear the things concerning you, so that you are standing firm in one spirit with one soul (psyche) contending together (athleo is part of word like athlete, compete, latin-conlaborantes) for the faith of the gospel, 28And not being frightened (terrified, latin-terreamini) in anything by (under, about) those opposing you, which is to them an indication of destruction (ruin, loss, cut off), however to you of salvation and that from God, 29Because to you it has been graced (freely given) on behalf of Christ, not only to believe unto Him, but rather also to suffer on behalf of Him, 30Having the same conflict (greek word agona like agony, agon referred to an athletic contest, struggle) such as you saw in me and now hear of in me. |
