Peter and John before the Sanhedrin

1But, as they were speaking to the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, 2being greatly troubled because of their teaching the people, and declaring in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody till the next day; for it was now evening. 4And many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men became about five thousand.

5And it came to pass, the next day, that their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem, 6and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest. 7And, having set them in the midst, they were inquiring, "In what power or in what name, did ye do this?" 8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, 9if we are this day examined in regard to a good deed done to an impotent man, by what means this person has been made whole; 10be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the Name of Jesus Christ, the Nazarene, Whom ye crucified, Whom God raised from the dead, in Him does this man stand here before you well! 11This is the Stone That was set at naught by you, the builders, Which was made into a head of a corner. 12And in no one else is there salvation; for neither is there any other name under Heaven, that has been given among men, in Which we must be saved."

The Name Forbidden

13Now, beholding the boldness of Peter and John, and perceiving that they were unlettered and ignorant men, they were wondering; they also were recognizing them, that they had been with Jesus; 14and, seeing the man who had been healed, standing with them, they had nothing to say against it. 15But, having ordered them to go aside out of the Sanhedrin, they were conferring one with another, 16saying, "What shall we do to these men? for, indeed, that a notable sign has been done through them is manifest to all those dwelling in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it; 17but, that it spread no further among the people, let us threaten them, that they speak no more to any man in This Name." 18And, having called them they charged them not to speak at all, nor teach, in the name of Jesus. 19But Peter and John, answering, said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to hearken to you, rather than to God, judge ye; 20for we cannot but speak the things which we saw and heard." 21And they, when they had further threatened them, released them, finding no way to punish them, on account of the people; because all were glorifying God for what had taken place; 22for the man, on whom this sign of healing had been done, was more than forty years old.

The Believers’ Prayer

23And, being released, they went to their own friends, and reported all that the high priests and the elders said to them. 24And they, having heard it, lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, "Lord, Thou Who didst make the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all things in them;

25Who, through the Holy Spirit by the mouth of our father David, Thy servant, didst say, 'Why did the gentiles rage, and the peoples premeditate empty things?

26The kings of the earth did set themselves in array; and the rulers assembled together, against the Lord, and against His Christ.'

27For, of a truth, there were gathered together in this city, against Thy Holy Child Jesus, Whom Thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the gentiles and peoples of Israel? 28to do whatsoever Thy hand and Thy counsel predetermined to come to pass. 29And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings; and grant to Thy servants to speak Thy word with all boldness, 30by stretching forth Thy hand for healing; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Thy Holy Child Jesus." 31And, when they had prayed, the place in which they had assembled was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and were speaking the word of God with boldness.

Sharing among Believers
(Acts 2:42–47)

32And the heart and soul of the multitude of those who believed were one; and not even one was saying that any of the things belonging to him was his own, but they had all things common. 33And, with great power, were the apostles giving forth their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus; and great grace also was upon them all. 34For neither was any one among them in want; for as many as were possessors of lands or houses, selling them, were bringing the prices of the things sold, 35and were laying them, at the feet of the apostles; and distribution was being made according as any one had need.

36And Joseph, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas (which is interpreted, "Son of Consolation"), a Levite, a Cyprian by birth, 37owning a field, having sold it, brought the money, and laid it at the feet of the apostles.
