Unholy fear, as distinct from the reverential fear of the Lord, is a pervasive theme in Scripture, often associated with the hypocrite—those who profess faith outwardly but lack genuine devotion and righteousness. This type of fear is characterized by anxiety, dread, and terror, particularly when one's hidden sins and insincerity are exposed.
Biblical Context and DefinitionUnholy fear is rooted in a lack of true faith and trust in God. It is the fear that arises from guilt, shame, and the anticipation of judgment. Unlike the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom (
Proverbs 9:10), unholy fear is destructive and paralyzing. It is the fear that Adam and Eve experienced after disobeying God, leading them to hide among the trees of the garden (
Genesis 3:8-10).
The Hypocrite's FearThe hypocrite, who outwardly appears righteous but inwardly harbors sin, is particularly susceptible to unholy fear. This fear is often a result of the internal conflict between their public persona and private reality.
Job 15:20-21 describes the plight of the wicked: "All his days the wicked man suffers torment, with the sound of terror in his ears; in his prosperity the destroyer attacks him."
The hypocrite's fear is compounded by the knowledge that their duplicity will eventually be uncovered. Jesus warned against hypocrisy, stating, "There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known" (
Luke 12:2). This impending revelation is a source of unholy fear for those who live in deceit.
Consequences of Unholy FearUnholy fear leads to a life of instability and insecurity.
Proverbs 28:1 notes, "The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion." The hypocrite, plagued by unholy fear, is constantly on the run, even when no immediate threat is present. This fear can manifest in various ways, including anxiety, paranoia, and a constant need to cover one's tracks.
Furthermore, unholy fear can lead to spiritual blindness and hardening of the heart. The hypocrite, in an attempt to maintain their facade, may become increasingly resistant to the truth and the convicting work of the Holy Spirit. This resistance only deepens their fear, as they are unable to find peace and assurance in God's promises.
Biblical ExamplesThe Bible provides several examples of individuals who experienced unholy fear due to their hypocrisy. King Saul, for instance, was tormented by fear and insecurity as he repeatedly disobeyed God's commands and sought to maintain his kingship through deceit and manipulation (
1 Samuel 15:24-26,
1 Samuel 18:12).
Ananias and Sapphira, in the New Testament, also exemplify the hypocrite's unholy fear. Their attempt to deceive the early church about the proceeds from the sale of their property resulted in immediate judgment and death (
Acts 5:1-11). Their fear of losing status and recognition led them to lie to the Holy Spirit, ultimately revealing the peril of hypocrisy.
Overcoming Unholy FearThe antidote to unholy fear is genuine repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. The hypocrite must turn from their duplicity and seek the Lord with a sincere heart. 1
John 4:18 assures believers, "There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love." By embracing the love and forgiveness offered through Christ, the hypocrite can be freed from the bondage of unholy fear and walk in the light of truth and righteousness.
