In the biblical context, the concept of royalty is deeply intertwined with the themes of divine authority, leadership, and covenant. Royalty in the Bible is not merely a matter of lineage or political power but is often depicted as a divine appointment, with kings and queens serving as representatives of God's rule on earth.

Divine Appointment and Kingship

The idea of kingship in Israel begins with the people's request for a king to lead them, as recorded in 1 Samuel 8. Despite God's initial warning about the potential pitfalls of human kingship, He grants their request, leading to the anointing of Saul as the first king of Israel. This event marks the transition from the period of the judges to the monarchy. The Berean Standard Bible records God's words to Samuel: "Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you. For it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected Me as their king" (1 Samuel 8:7).

The Davidic Covenant

King David, the second king of Israel, is a central figure in the biblical narrative of royalty. His reign is marked by the establishment of Jerusalem as the political and spiritual center of Israel. The Davidic Covenant, as described in 2 Samuel 7, promises that David's lineage will endure forever, a promise that Christians believe is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The BSB states: "Your house and kingdom will endure forever before Me, and your throne will be established forever" (2 Samuel 7:16).

Solomon and the Golden Age

Solomon, David's son, is renowned for his wisdom and the construction of the First Temple in Jerusalem. His reign is often considered the golden age of Israelite history, characterized by peace and prosperity. However, Solomon's later years are marked by idolatry and political alliances that lead to the division of the kingdom after his death. The BSB recounts Solomon's request for wisdom: "So give Your servant a discerning heart to govern Your people and to distinguish between right and wrong" (1 Kings 3:9).

The Role of Queens

While kings dominate the biblical narrative of royalty, queens also play significant roles. Queen Esther, for example, is a pivotal figure who uses her royal position to save the Jewish people from destruction, as detailed in the Book of Esther. Her account highlights themes of courage, providence, and the influence of a godly woman in a royal court.

The Messianic King

The concept of royalty in the Bible reaches its zenith in the person of Jesus Christ, who is often referred to as the "King of Kings and Lord of Lords" (Revelation 19:16). Christians believe that Jesus fulfills the Old Testament prophecies concerning a coming king from the line of David. His kingdom is not of this world, as He declares in John 18:36: "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is not of this realm" .

The Eternal Kingdom

The Bible concludes with the vision of an eternal kingdom where Christ reigns supreme. The Book of Revelation describes a new heaven and a new earth where God's people will reign with Him forever. This eschatological hope is central to the Christian understanding of royalty, emphasizing the ultimate sovereignty of God and the eternal reign of Christ.
