Responding to Astonishment

Topical Encyclopedia
Astonishment is a profound emotional response to something unexpected or extraordinary. In the Bible, astonishment often accompanies divine revelation, miraculous events, or the teachings of Jesus. The appropriate response to astonishment, as depicted in Scripture, involves faith, worship, and a deeper understanding of God's power and purpose.

Biblical Instances of Astonishment

1. Miracles of Jesus: The Gospels frequently record the astonishment of the crowds at Jesus' miracles. For example, after Jesus healed a paralytic, the crowd was amazed and glorified God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this!" (Mark 2:12). This response highlights the importance of recognizing God's hand in miraculous events and giving Him glory.

2. Teachings of Jesus: Jesus' teachings often left His listeners astonished. In Matthew 7:28-29 , it is noted, "When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their scribes." The astonishment here calls for a response of acknowledging Jesus' divine authority and wisdom.

3. Resurrection of Jesus: The resurrection of Jesus is the pinnacle of astonishment in the New Testament. The women who visited the tomb were initially bewildered, but their response turned to joy and proclamation as they encountered the risen Christ (Matthew 28:8-10). This event calls believers to respond with faith and the sharing of the Gospel.

Responses to Astonishment

1. Faith and Belief: Astonishment should lead to a strengthening of faith. In Mark 5:42 , after Jesus raised a girl from the dead, "they were overcome with great amazement." This amazement is a call to trust in Jesus' power over life and death.

2. Worship and Praise: A common biblical response to astonishment is worship. In Luke 5:26 , after Jesus healed a paralytic, "Everyone was taken with amazement and glorified God. They were filled with awe and said, 'We have seen remarkable things today.'" Worship acknowledges God's greatness and sovereignty.

3. Proclamation and Witness: Astonishment can lead to a bold proclamation of God's works. The apostles, filled with the Holy Spirit, performed signs and wonders that astonished many, leading to the spread of the Gospel (Acts 2:12). Believers are called to share their experiences of God's power with others.

4. Reflection and Understanding: Astonishment should prompt reflection and a deeper understanding of God's purposes. In Luke 2:18-19 , after the shepherds shared the news of Jesus' birth, "all who heard it were amazed... But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart." This response encourages believers to meditate on God's works and seek His wisdom.

Warnings Against Misguided Astonishment

While astonishment can lead to positive spiritual responses, the Bible also warns against misguided reactions. In Acts 8:9-11 , Simon the sorcerer amazed the people of Samaria with his magic, leading them astray. This serves as a caution against being led by false wonders and emphasizes the need for discernment.

In summary, responding to astonishment in a biblical manner involves faith, worship, proclamation, and reflection. These responses draw believers closer to God and align their hearts with His divine purposes.
