The term "relieth" is an archaic form of the word "relies," which appears in older translations of the Bible. It is used to describe the act of depending or placing trust in someone or something. In the context of Scripture, "relieth" often refers to the trust and dependence that individuals place in God, His promises, or His provisions.

Biblical Usage and Context

The concept of relying on God is a central theme throughout the Bible. It underscores the relationship between God and His people, emphasizing faith, trust, and dependence on divine guidance and provision. While the specific term "relieth" may not appear in the Berean Standard Bible, the idea is prevalent in various passages.

Old Testament References

In the Old Testament, the notion of relying on God is frequently associated with the covenant relationship between God and Israel. The Israelites were often reminded to trust in God rather than in their own strength or in foreign powers. For example, in Isaiah 26:3-4 , the prophet declares, "You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, because GOD the LORD is the Rock eternal."

The Psalms also provide numerous examples of reliance on God. Psalm 37:5 encourages believers to "Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will do it." This verse highlights the importance of entrusting one's life and plans to God, with the assurance that He will act on behalf of those who rely on Him.

New Testament References

In the New Testament, reliance on God is further emphasized through the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. Jesus Himself taught about the importance of trusting in God for daily needs. In Matthew 6:25-34 , Jesus instructs His followers not to worry about their lives, what they will eat or drink, or what they will wear, but to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, trusting that all these things will be provided.

The apostle Paul also speaks to the theme of reliance on God in his letters. In 2 Corinthians 1:9-10 , Paul writes, "Indeed, we felt we were under the sentence of death, in order that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us. In Him we have placed our hope that He will yet again deliver us."

Theological Implications

Reliance on God is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith, reflecting a believer's trust in God's sovereignty, wisdom, and love. It involves acknowledging human limitations and the need for divine intervention and guidance. This reliance is not passive but active, requiring believers to live in obedience to God's commands and to seek His will in all aspects of life.

The Bible consistently portrays God as a reliable and faithful provider, protector, and guide. Believers are encouraged to cast their anxieties on Him, as stated in 1 Peter 5:7 : "Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you." This assurance of God's care and provision is a source of comfort and strength for those who rely on Him.

Practical Application

For Christians today, the call to rely on God remains as relevant as ever. In a world filled with uncertainties and challenges, believers are encouraged to place their trust in God's unchanging nature and His promises. This reliance is expressed through prayer, worship, and a commitment to living according to biblical principles. By doing so, Christians can experience the peace and assurance that come from knowing that God is in control and that He is faithful to those who trust in Him.
