The term "outgoing" is not directly mentioned in the Bible; however, the concept can be explored through various biblical principles and examples of individuals who exhibited outgoing characteristics. In a biblical context, being outgoing can be associated with qualities such as hospitality, boldness in sharing the Gospel, and engaging with others in love and service.

Hospitality and Fellowship

The Bible places a strong emphasis on hospitality, which is a key aspect of being outgoing. In the New Testament, believers are encouraged to be hospitable and to engage with others in fellowship. Romans 12:13 instructs, "Share with the saints who are in need. Practice hospitality." This call to hospitality reflects an outgoing nature, as it involves reaching out to others and creating a welcoming environment.

The early church is a prime example of outgoing fellowship. Acts 2:46-47 describes the believers: "With one accord, they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people." This passage highlights the communal and outgoing spirit of the early Christians, who actively engaged with one another and their community.

Boldness in Sharing the Gospel

An outgoing nature is also evident in the boldness to share the Gospel. The Apostle Paul is a notable example of someone who was outgoing in his mission to spread the message of Christ. In Acts 28:31 , it is recorded that Paul "boldly and freely proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ." His willingness to engage with diverse groups and cultures demonstrates an outgoing commitment to his calling.

The Great Commission, as given by Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20 , further underscores the importance of being outgoing in the context of evangelism: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you." This command requires believers to step out of their comfort zones and actively engage with the world.

Engaging with Others in Love and Service

Being outgoing in a biblical sense also involves engaging with others through acts of love and service. Jesus Himself set the ultimate example of outgoing love by serving others and reaching out to those in need. In John 13:34-35 , Jesus commands, "A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another."

The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) illustrates the outgoing nature of love and service. The Samaritan went out of his way to help a stranger in need, demonstrating compassion and mercy. This parable encourages believers to be proactive and outgoing in their love for others, regardless of social or cultural barriers.

Conclusion

While the Bible does not explicitly use the term "outgoing," the principles of hospitality, boldness in evangelism, and love in action reflect an outgoing spirit. These qualities are integral to living out the Christian faith and fulfilling the call to be salt and light in the world.

OUTGOING

out'-go-ing: In Psalm 65:8, "Thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice," the Hebrew is motsa'. The word (from yatsa', "to go forth") refers to the "going forth" of the sun, and so means "east" (as in Psalm 75:6). The connection of motsa' with "evening" is therefore zeugmatic, but the meaning is clear and there are extra-Biblical parallels (compare "the two Orients"). In Joshua 17:18, the King James Version uses "outgoings" for the Hebrew totsa'oth (also from yatsa'), where the meaning is "extremity" (the Revised Version (British and American) "goings out," as in Numbers 34:5, etc.). "Outwent" occurs in the margin of Mark 6:33.
