Types of the Saviour: Noah

In the study of typology within the Scriptures, Noah emerges as a significant type of the Saviour, Jesus Christ. Typology is a theological concept where an element found in the Old Testament is seen to prefigure one found in the New Testament. Noah, as a type, prefigures Christ in several profound ways, illustrating the redemptive work and the salvation offered through Jesus.

Righteousness and Obedience

Noah is described as a righteous man, "blameless among his contemporaries" (Genesis 6:9). His righteousness sets him apart in a world filled with corruption and violence, much like Christ, who lived a sinless life amidst a fallen world. Noah's obedience to God's commands to build the ark (Genesis 6:22) mirrors Christ's obedience to the Father, even unto death on the cross (Philippians 2:8). This obedience is central to the salvific work of both Noah and Christ, as it is through their faithfulness that salvation is made possible.

Salvation through Judgment

The narrative of Noah is one of salvation through judgment. God declares His intention to judge the earth with a flood due to its wickedness (Genesis 6:13), yet provides a means of salvation through the ark. Noah's ark becomes the vessel of deliverance for him and his family, prefiguring Christ as the ultimate vessel of salvation. Just as Noah and his family were saved from the waters of judgment, so too are believers saved from the judgment of sin through Christ. The apostle Peter draws this parallel explicitly, stating, "In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes the baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body, but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 3:20-21).

Covenant and New Beginnings

After the flood, God establishes a covenant with Noah, promising never again to destroy the earth with a flood and setting the rainbow as a sign of this covenant (Genesis 9:11-13). This covenant signifies a new beginning for humanity, much like the new covenant established through Christ's death and resurrection. Jesus, through His sacrifice, inaugurates a new covenant, offering eternal life and reconciliation with God (Hebrews 9:15). Noah's emergence from the ark into a renewed world foreshadows the new creation that believers enter through Christ.

Preacher of Righteousness

Noah is also identified as a "preacher of righteousness" (2 Peter 2:5), warning his generation of the impending judgment. This role as a herald of righteousness parallels Christ's earthly ministry, where He proclaimed the coming kingdom of God and called for repentance (Mark 1:15). Both figures serve as divine messengers, urging humanity to turn from sin and embrace the salvation offered by God.

Preservation of Life

The preservation of life through Noah's ark is another typological element pointing to Christ. Just as Noah preserved the human race and animal life through the ark, Christ preserves spiritual life for all who believe in Him. Jesus declares, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies" (John 11:25). This promise of eternal life is the ultimate fulfillment of the preservation seen in Noah's account.

In these ways, Noah serves as a profound type of the Saviour, illustrating key aspects of Christ's redemptive work and the salvation He offers to humanity. Through Noah, the Scriptures provide a foreshadowing of the greater deliverance to come through Jesus Christ.
