Security: False is Ignorant of God and Truth
Jump to: Nave'sLibrarySubtopicsTerms
Topical Encyclopedia
In the biblical context, the concept of false security is often associated with a misplaced trust in worldly things, human wisdom, or material wealth, rather than in God. This false sense of security is rooted in ignorance of God's sovereignty and truth, leading individuals to rely on unstable foundations.

Ignorance of God

The Bible frequently warns against the dangers of placing trust in anything other than God. In Jeremiah 17:5 , it is written, "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind, who makes the flesh his strength and turns his heart from the LORD." This verse highlights the folly of relying on human strength and wisdom, which are inherently limited and fallible. Such reliance is indicative of a lack of understanding of God's omnipotence and faithfulness.

The ignorance of God is further illustrated in Proverbs 14:12 : "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." This passage underscores the deceptive nature of human reasoning when it is not aligned with divine wisdom. When individuals are ignorant of God's ways, they are prone to follow paths that lead to destruction, falsely believing them to be secure.

Ignorance of Truth

False security is also a result of ignorance of the truth as revealed in Scripture. In John 8:32 , Jesus declares, "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." The truth of God's Word is a source of genuine security, offering freedom from the bondage of sin and the deception of false beliefs. Ignorance of this truth leaves individuals vulnerable to the false promises of the world.

The Apostle Paul warns against being deceived by false teachings in Colossians 2:8 : "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, rather than according to Christ." Here, Paul emphasizes the importance of grounding one's security in the truth of Christ, rather than in the hollow philosophies of the world.

Worldly Wealth and Security

The Bible also addresses the false security found in material wealth. In Luke 12:15 , Jesus cautions, "Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." This warning highlights the transient nature of wealth and the danger of equating it with true security. The parable of the rich fool in Luke 12:16-21 further illustrates this point, as the man's trust in his wealth ultimately leads to his downfall.

In 1 Timothy 6:17 , Paul advises, "Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be conceited and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealth, but in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment." This instruction serves as a reminder that true security is found in God, who is the ultimate provider, rather than in the fleeting and uncertain nature of material riches.

Conclusion

The Bible consistently teaches that false security arises from ignorance of God and His truth. By placing trust in human wisdom, material wealth, or worldly philosophies, individuals are led away from the true security found in a relationship with God. The Scriptures call believers to seek understanding and knowledge of God, grounding their security in His unchanging nature and the truth of His Word.
