Security: False: God is Against It

In the biblical narrative, the concept of false security is frequently addressed, highlighting the dangers of placing trust in anything other than God. The Scriptures consistently warn against relying on human strength, wealth, idols, or any other form of security that diverts trust away from the Lord.

Trust in Human Strength and Wisdom

The Bible cautions against placing confidence in human abilities and wisdom. In Jeremiah 17:5 , it is written, "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind, who makes the flesh his strength and turns his heart from the LORD." This verse underscores the futility and spiritual peril of relying on human resources rather than divine guidance. Similarly, Isaiah 31:1 warns, "Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the abundance of chariots and in the great strength of horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or seek help from the LORD."

Reliance on Wealth

The Scriptures also address the false security found in wealth. Proverbs 11:28 states, "He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf." This proverb highlights the transient nature of material wealth and the ultimate security found in righteousness and trust in God. Jesus further emphasizes this in the New Testament, as seen in Matthew 6:19-21 : "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Idolatry and False Gods

Idolatry is another form of false security condemned in the Bible. The prophets frequently rebuked Israel for turning to idols, which were powerless to save. In Isaiah 44:9-10 , the prophet declares, "All makers of idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind; they are ignorant, to their own shame. Who fashions a god or casts an idol which profits him nothing?" This passage illustrates the futility and deception of trusting in man-made objects rather than the living God.

National and Political Alliances

The Bible also addresses the false security found in political alliances and national strength. In Isaiah 30:1-3 , the Lord warns, "Woe to the obstinate children, declares the LORD, who carry out a plan that is not Mine, forming an alliance, but against My will, heaping up sin upon sin. They set out to go down to Egypt without consulting Me, to seek help from Pharaoh’s protection and take refuge in Egypt’s shade. But Pharaoh’s protection will become your shame, and the refuge of Egypt’s shade your disgrace." This passage highlights the danger of seeking security through political means without seeking God's guidance and approval.

Conclusion

Throughout the Bible, the theme of false security serves as a reminder of the importance of placing one's trust solely in God. The Scriptures consistently teach that true security is found not in human strength, wealth, idols, or political alliances, but in a faithful relationship with the Lord.
