Glorifying God: The Wicked Averse To
Jump to: Nave'sLibrarySubtopicsTerms

The concept of glorifying God is central to Christian theology, emphasizing the acknowledgment of God's supreme majesty, holiness, and authority. However, Scripture consistently portrays the wicked as being averse to glorifying God, illustrating a fundamental opposition between the unrighteous and the divine will.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible frequently contrasts the righteous, who seek to glorify God, with the wicked, who resist doing so. In Romans 1:21 , the Apostle Paul describes the condition of the wicked: "For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened." This passage highlights the willful ignorance and ingratitude of the wicked, who, despite knowing of God's existence and power, choose not to honor Him.

Characteristics of the Wicked

The wicked are often characterized by their rebellion against God's authority and their pursuit of self-glorification. In Psalm 10:4 , it is written, "In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God." This verse underscores the pride and self-centeredness that prevent the wicked from acknowledging God's rightful place in their lives.

Furthermore, the wicked are described as being spiritually blind and deaf to the truth of God's glory. In 2 Corinthians 4:4 , Paul explains, "The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." This spiritual blindness is a significant barrier to glorifying God, as it prevents the wicked from recognizing the divine truth revealed in Christ.

Consequences of Averseness

The aversion of the wicked to glorifying God has profound consequences, both in this life and the life to come. Romans 2:8 warns, "But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow wickedness, there will be wrath and anger." The refusal to glorify God results in divine judgment, as the wicked are held accountable for their rejection of God's truth and authority.

Additionally, the wicked's aversion to glorifying God leads to a life devoid of true purpose and fulfillment. Ecclesiastes 12:13 states, "Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind." By failing to fulfill this fundamental duty, the wicked miss out on the joy and peace that come from living in harmony with God's will.

Contrast with the Righteous

In contrast to the wicked, the righteous are depicted as those who delight in glorifying God. Psalm 86:12 declares, "I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify Your name forever." The righteous recognize the importance of glorifying God and strive to do so in every aspect of their lives, reflecting a heart transformed by God's grace.

The righteous also understand that glorifying God is not merely a duty but a privilege. In 1 Corinthians 10:31 , Paul exhorts believers, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God." This comprehensive approach to glorifying God stands in stark contrast to the wicked's aversion, highlighting the transformative power of a life surrendered to God's purposes.
