Definition and Meaning:
Magormissabib is a symbolic name given by the prophet Jeremiah to Pashhur, the son of Immer, a priest and chief officer in the house of the Lord. The name "Magormissabib" translates to "terror on every side" or "fear all around," reflecting the impending judgment and calamity that would befall Pashhur and the people of Judah due to their disobedience and rejection of God's word.

Biblical Context:
The term "Magormissabib" appears in the Book of Jeremiah, specifically in Jeremiah 20:3. This passage is part of a narrative where Jeremiah, a prophet called by God to warn Judah of its impending destruction due to idolatry and sin, faces persecution for his prophecies.

Scriptural Reference:
Jeremiah 20:1-3 : "When Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer and chief officer in the house of the LORD, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things, he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin at the house of the LORD. The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, 'The LORD does not call you Pashhur, but Magor-missabib.'"

Historical and Theological Significance:
The renaming of Pashhur to Magormissabib by Jeremiah is significant both historically and theologically. Historically, it marks a moment of intense conflict between the prophetic message of impending judgment and the established religious authorities of the time. Pashhur, representing the religious establishment, sought to silence Jeremiah, who was proclaiming God's truth.

Theologically, the name Magormissabib serves as a divine pronouncement of judgment. It underscores the theme of divine retribution that runs throughout the Book of Jeremiah. The name is a prophetic declaration that Pashhur and the people of Judah would experience terror and destruction as a consequence of their unfaithfulness to God. This reflects the broader biblical principle that disobedience to God leads to judgment, while repentance and faithfulness lead to restoration.

Prophetic Implications:
Jeremiah's use of the name Magormissabib is a vivid illustration of the role of the prophet as a mouthpiece for God, delivering messages that are often unwelcome but necessary for the spiritual health of the people. It highlights the courage required of prophets to speak truth to power, even in the face of persecution.

The prophecy against Pashhur and the subsequent events in the Book of Jeremiah serve as a warning to all generations about the dangers of ignoring God's word and the inevitable consequences of sin. The name Magormissabib thus becomes a symbol of the fear and chaos that result from turning away from God, emphasizing the need for repentance and obedience to divine commands.
