In the biblical context, "dreamers" often refers to individuals who receive divine messages or revelations through dreams. Dreams in the Bible are significant as they are frequently used by God to communicate His will, provide guidance, or foretell future events. The role of dreamers is evident throughout both the Old and New Testaments, where dreams serve as a medium for divine interaction with humanity.

Old Testament Dreamers

1. Joseph, Son of Jacob: One of the most prominent dreamers in the Bible is Joseph, the son of Jacob. Joseph's dreams, which he shared with his brothers, foretold his future rise to power and the eventual bowing of his family before him. These dreams, found in Genesis 37:5-11, led to his brothers' jealousy and his subsequent sale into slavery. Despite his hardships, Joseph's ability to interpret dreams, as seen in Genesis 41, ultimately led to his elevation to a position of power in Egypt, where he interpreted Pharaoh's dreams about the coming famine.

2. Daniel: Another key figure is Daniel, who was gifted with the ability to interpret dreams and visions. In the Book of Daniel, he interprets King Nebuchadnezzar's dreams, which reveal God's sovereignty over earthly kingdoms (Daniel 2:1-45). Daniel's own visions, such as those in Daniel 7, provide prophetic insights into future events and the coming of God's eternal kingdom.

3. Solomon: Solomon, known for his wisdom, received a significant dream in which God appeared to him, offering him anything he desired. Solomon asked for wisdom, and God granted him unparalleled understanding, as recorded in 1 Kings 3:5-15.

New Testament Dreamers

1. Joseph, Husband of Mary: In the New Testament, Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, receives divine guidance through dreams. An angel of the Lord appears to him in a dream, instructing him to take Mary as his wife despite her miraculous pregnancy (Matthew 1:20-21). Later, he is warned in a dream to flee to Egypt to protect the infant Jesus from King Herod's massacre (Matthew 2:13).

2. The Wise Men: The Magi, or wise men, who visited Jesus after His birth, were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, prompting them to take a different route home (Matthew 2:12).

Warnings Against False Dreamers

The Bible also warns against false dreamers who claim to have divine revelations but lead people astray. In Deuteronomy 13:1-5, God instructs the Israelites to test the authenticity of prophets and dreamers, emphasizing that even if a sign or wonder comes true, if it leads people away from God, it is not to be heeded. Similarly, Jeremiah 23:25-32 condemns false prophets who deceive with dreams of their own making.

Dreams as a Means of Revelation

Throughout Scripture, dreams are a recognized means by which God reveals His plans and purposes. In Joel 2:28, a prophecy later quoted by Peter in Acts 2:17, God promises that in the last days, He will pour out His Spirit, and "your old men will dream dreams." This indicates the continued relevance of dreams as a form of divine communication.

Conclusion

Dreamers in the Bible serve as conduits for God's messages, providing insight, warning, and guidance. While dreams can be a source of divine revelation, the Bible also cautions believers to discern the truth and align any dream-inspired message with God's revealed Word.
