The term "consummation" in biblical theology refers to the completion or fulfillment of God's divine plan and purposes. It is often associated with the end times, the final judgment, and the establishment of God's eternal kingdom. The concept of consummation is woven throughout Scripture, highlighting the culmination of God's redemptive work in history.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the idea of consummation is often linked to the fulfillment of God's promises to Israel. The prophetic literature frequently speaks of a future time when God's purposes will be fully realized. For instance, the Book of Daniel speaks of a period of consummation in the context of prophetic visions. Daniel 9:27 states, "And he will confirm a covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations will come the one who makes desolate, until the decreed destruction is poured out upon him." This passage points to a future time when God's decrees will reach their fulfillment.

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, the consummation is closely associated with the second coming of Christ and the establishment of the new heavens and new earth. Jesus Himself speaks of the end of the age and the fulfillment of God's kingdom. In Matthew 24:14 , Jesus declares, "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come." This indicates that the consummation of God's plan involves the global proclamation of the gospel.

The Apostle Paul also addresses the theme of consummation in his epistles. In Ephesians 1:9-10 , Paul writes, "And He made known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to bring all things in heaven and on earth together in Christ." Here, Paul emphasizes the ultimate unification of all things under Christ as part of God's consummate plan.

Eschatological Significance

The Book of Revelation provides a vivid depiction of the consummation of history. Revelation 21:1-4 describes the new creation: "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.'"

This passage encapsulates the ultimate consummation of God's redemptive work, where the effects of sin and death are eradicated, and God's presence is fully realized among His people.

Theological Implications

The doctrine of consummation underscores the hope and assurance that believers have in the promises of God. It affirms that history is moving toward a divinely ordained goal, where God's justice, righteousness, and peace will prevail. The anticipation of consummation encourages believers to live in light of eternity, fostering a sense of urgency in sharing the gospel and a commitment to holy living.

Throughout Scripture, the theme of consummation serves as a reminder of God's sovereignty and faithfulness. It assures believers that despite the present challenges and tribulations, God's ultimate purpose will be accomplished, and His kingdom will be established forever.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary

CONSUMMATION

kon-su-ma'-shun (killayon from kalah): The word, meaning destruction, completion, or failing (Isaiah 10:23; Isaiah 28:22 Daniel 9:27) is translated interchangeably in the King James Version for another Hebrew word referring to a physical disease, and best translated "consumption"; compare Leviticus 26:16 Deuteronomy 28:22. Not used in the Revised Version (British and American). The Hebrew variously but more accurately translated "full end"; compare Daniel 9:27 Isaiah 10:23; and "destruction"; compare Isaiah 10:22; Isaiah 28:22. There seems therefore to be an inconsistency on the part of both the Authorized and Revised translations.
