The term "assailed" refers to being attacked or confronted with force, whether physically, verbally, or spiritually. In the context of the Bible, individuals and groups often faced various forms of assault, both from human adversaries and spiritual forces. The concept of being assailed is prevalent throughout Scripture, illustrating the trials and tribulations faced by God's people and the divine deliverance that often follows.

Old Testament Instances

1. David and Saul: One of the most notable examples of being assailed is King David's experience with King Saul. Driven by jealousy and fear, Saul repeatedly sought to kill David. Despite being assailed by Saul's relentless pursuit, David remained faithful to God and was ultimately delivered. In 1 Samuel 19:10, we read, "Saul tried to pin David to the wall with his spear, but David eluded him, so that Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David fled and escaped."

2. The Israelites in Egypt: The Israelites were assailed by the Egyptians, who enslaved them and subjected them to harsh labor. Their cries for deliverance were heard by God, who sent Moses to lead them out of bondage. Exodus 3:9 states, "And now the cry of the Israelites has reached Me, and I have seen how severely the Egyptians are oppressing them."

3. Nehemiah and the Rebuilding of Jerusalem's Walls: Nehemiah faced opposition from surrounding enemies as he led the effort to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Despite being assailed by threats and plots, Nehemiah trusted in God and completed the work. Nehemiah 4:8-9 records, "They all conspired together to come and fight against Jerusalem and create a hindrance. So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them day and night."

New Testament Instances

1. Jesus Christ: Jesus Himself was assailed by various groups, including the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Roman authorities. Despite facing false accusations and ultimately crucifixion, Jesus fulfilled His mission of salvation. In Matthew 26:59-60, it is written, "The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking false testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death. But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward."

2. The Apostles: The early apostles were frequently assailed as they spread the Gospel. They faced imprisonment, beatings, and persecution but remained steadfast in their mission. Acts 5:40-41 recounts, "They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them. The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name."

3. Paul the Apostle: Paul experienced numerous assaults during his missionary journeys, including being stoned, shipwrecked, and imprisoned. Yet, he continued to preach the Gospel with boldness. In 2 Corinthians 11:24-25, Paul details his sufferings: "Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea."

Spiritual Assaults

The Bible also speaks of spiritual assaults, where believers are assailed by the forces of darkness. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world's darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Believers are encouraged to put on the full armor of God to withstand these spiritual attacks.

Throughout Scripture, those who are assailed often find refuge and strength in God. The Psalms frequently express this reliance on divine protection, as seen in Psalm 18:17, "He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from foes too mighty for me." The biblical narrative consistently demonstrates that while God's people may be assailed, they are never abandoned by their Lord.
