Additional Priestly Garments

Topical Encyclopedia
In the Old Testament, the priestly garments hold significant importance, symbolizing the sanctity and duties of those who served in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple. While the primary garments of the High Priest, such as the ephod, breastplate, robe, tunic, turban, and sash, are well-documented in Exodus 28, there are additional garments and accessories that are also noteworthy.

Linen Undergarments

The linen undergarments, or breeches, were worn by both the High Priest and the regular priests. These were made of fine linen and were designed to cover the body from the waist to the thighs, ensuring modesty as they performed their sacred duties. Exodus 28:42 states, "Make linen undergarments to cover their bare flesh; they must extend from the waist to the thighs."

Turban and Headbands

The High Priest wore a special turban, which was distinct from the head coverings of the other priests. On the front of the High Priest's turban was a gold plate inscribed with "Holy to the LORD" (Exodus 28:36-37). This signified the consecration of the High Priest to God. The regular priests also wore headbands, though these were simpler in design.

Sash

The sash, or girdle, was another essential garment for both the High Priest and the regular priests. It was used to secure the tunic and was often intricately woven with colorful threads. The sash symbolized readiness and service, as it was used to gird up the garments for active duty.

Additional Accessories

The High Priest also wore the Urim and Thummim, which were placed in the breastplate of judgment. These objects were used to discern God's will in certain situations, though their exact nature and method of use remain a mystery. Exodus 28:30 states, "Put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastpiece of judgment, so that they will be over Aaron’s heart whenever he enters the presence of the LORD."

Symbolism and Function

The additional priestly garments served both practical and symbolic purposes. Practically, they ensured the priests were appropriately attired for their duties, maintaining modesty and readiness. Symbolically, each piece of clothing represented aspects of holiness, service, and the unique role of the priesthood in mediating between God and the people of Israel.

The detailed instructions for these garments, as found in the Pentateuch, underscore the importance of approaching God with reverence and the necessity of purity and dedication in worship. The garments were not merely for adornment but were integral to the identity and function of the priestly office, reflecting the glory and beauty of the divine service they were called to perform.
