Jonah Sent to Nineveh, Flees to Tarshish

(Nahum 1:1-15)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
1The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:1Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,1The word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai saying,1Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,1The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:"
2"Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me."2“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.”2"Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me."2Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.2Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because their wickedness has confronted Me."
3But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.3But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.3But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.3But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.3However, Jonah got up to flee to Tarshish from the LORD's presence. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. He paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish, from the LORD's presence.

The Great Storm

(Jeremiah 6:10-21; Jeremiah 25:15-33; Acts 27:13-26; Romans 1:18-32)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
4Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.4But the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up.4The LORD hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship was about to break up.4But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.4Then the LORD hurled a violent wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose on the sea that the ship threatened to break apart.
5All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.5Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep.5Then the sailors became afraid and every man cried to his god, and they threw the cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone below into the hold of the ship, lain down and fallen sound asleep.5Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.5The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his god. They threw the ship's cargo into the sea to lighten the load. Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel and had stretched out and fallen into a deep sleep.
6The captain went to him and said, "How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish."6So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.”6So the captain approached him and said, "How is it that you are sleeping? Get up, call on your god. Perhaps your god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish."6So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.6The captain approached him and said, "What are you doing sound asleep? Get up! Call to your god. Maybe this god will consider us, and we won't perish.""
7Then the sailors said to each other, "Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity." They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.7And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.7Each man said to his mate, "Come, let us cast lots so we may learn on whose account this calamity has struck us." So they cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.7And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.7Come on!" the sailors said to each other. "Let's cast lots. Then we'll know who is to blame for this trouble we're in." So they cast lots, and the lot singled out Jonah.

8So they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?"8Then they said to him, “Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?”8Then they said to him, "Tell us, now! On whose account has this calamity struck us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?"8Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?8Then they said to him, "Tell us who is to blame for this trouble we're in. What is your business and where are you from? What is your country and what people are you from?"
9He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."9And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”9He said to them, "I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD God of heaven who made the sea and the dry land."9And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.9He answered them, "I'm a Hebrew. I worship Yahweh, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land."
10This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)10Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, “What is this that you have done!” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.10Then the men became extremely frightened and they said to him, "How could you do this?" For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.10Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.10Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, "What is this you've done?" The men knew he was fleeing from the LORD's presence, because he had told them.

Jonah Cast Into the Sea and Swallowed

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
11The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?"11Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.11So they said to him, "What should we do to you that the sea may become calm for us?"-- for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy.11Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.11So they said to him, "What should we do to you to calm this sea that's against us?" For the sea was getting worse and worse.
12"Pick me up and throw me into the sea," he replied, "and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you."12He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.”12He said to them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm for you, for I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you."12And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.12He answered them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea so it may quiet down for you, for I know that I'm to blame for this violent storm that is against you."
13Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.13Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.13However, the men rowed desperately to return to land but they could not, for the sea was becoming even stormier against them.13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.13Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they couldn't because the sea was raging against them more and more.
14Then they cried out to the LORD, "Please, LORD, do not let us die for taking this man's life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, LORD, have done as you pleased."14Therefore they called out to the LORD, “O LORD, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O LORD, have done as it pleased you.”14Then they called on the LORD and said, "We earnestly pray, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man's life and do not put innocent blood on us; for You, O LORD, have done as You have pleased."14Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.14So they called out to the LORD: "Please, Yahweh, don't let us perish because of this man's life, and don't charge us with innocent blood! For You, Yahweh, have done just as You pleased."

15Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.15So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.15So they picked up Jonah, threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging.15So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.15Then they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging.
16At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.16Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows.16Then the men feared the LORD greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows.16Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.16The men feared the LORD even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows.
17Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.17And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.17And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights.17Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.17Now the LORD had appointed a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the fish three days and three nights.
