| 1Then the LORD told Moses, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses: |
| 2“Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. “When you finally settle in the land I am giving you, | 2"Speak to the Israelites and tell them, 'When you enter the land where you are to live, which I am giving you, |
| 3you will offer special gifts as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. These gifts may take the form of a burnt offering, a sacrifice to fulfill a vow, a voluntary offering, or an offering at any of your annual festivals, and they may be taken from your herds of cattle or your flocks of sheep and goats. | 3and you make an offering by fire to the LORD from the herd or from the flock (whether a burnt offering or a sacrifice for discharging a vow or as a freewill offering or in your solemn feasts) to create a pleasing aroma to the LORD, |
| 4When you present these offerings, you must also give the LORD a grain offering of two quarts of choice flour mixed with one quart of olive oil. | 4then the one who presents his offering to the LORD must bring a grain offering of one-tenth of an ephah of finely ground flour mixed with one fourth of a hin of olive oil. |
| 5For each lamb offered as a burnt offering or a special sacrifice, you must also present one quart of wine as a liquid offering. | 5You must also prepare one-fourth of a hin of wine for a drink offering with the burnt offering or the sacrifice for each lamb. |
| 6“If the sacrifice is a ram, give a grain offering of four quarts of choice flour mixed with a third of a gallon of olive oil, | 6Or for a ram, you must prepare as a grain offering two-tenths of an ephah of finely ground flour mixed with one-third of a hin of olive oil, |
| 7and give a third of a gallon of wine as a liquid offering. This will be a pleasing aroma to the LORD. | 7and for a drink offering you must offer one-third of a hin of wine as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. |
| 8“When you present a young bull as a burnt offering or as a sacrifice to fulfill a vow or as a peace offering to the LORD, | 8And when you prepare a young bull as a burnt offering or a sacrifice for discharging a vow or as a peace offering to the LORD, |
| 9you must also give a grain offering of six quarts of choice flour mixed with two quarts of olive oil, | 9then a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of finely ground flour mixed with half a hin of olive oil must be presented with the young bull, |
| 10and give two quarts of wine as a liquid offering. This will be a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the LORD. | 10and you must present as the drink offering half a hin of wine with the fire offering as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. |
| 11“Each sacrifice of a bull, ram, lamb, or young goat should be prepared in this way. | 11This is what is to be done for each ox, or each ram, or each of the male lambs or the goats. |
| 12Follow these instructions with each offering you present. | 12You must do so for each one according to the number that you prepare. |
| 13All of you native-born Israelites must follow these instructions when you offer a special gift as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. | 13"'Every native-born person must do these things in this way to present an offering made by fire as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. |
| 14And if any foreigners visit you or live among you and want to present a special gift as a pleasing aroma to the LORD, they must follow these same procedures. | 14If a resident foreigner is living with you--or whoever is among you in future generations--and prepares an offering made by fire as a pleasing aroma to the LORD, he must do it the same way you are to do it. |
| 15Native-born Israelites and foreigners are equal before the LORD and are subject to the same decrees. This is a permanent law for you, to be observed from generation to generation. | 15One statute must apply to you who belong to the congregation and to the resident foreigner who is living among you, as a permanent statute for your future generations. You and the resident foreigner will be alike before the LORD. |
| 16The same instructions and regulations will apply both to you and to the foreigners living among you.” | 16One law and one custom must apply to you and to the resident foreigner who lives alongside you.'" |
| 17Then the LORD said to Moses, | 17The LORD spoke to Moses: |
| 18“Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. “When you arrive in the land where I am taking you, | 18"Speak to the Israelites and tell them, 'When you enter the land to which I am bringing you |
| 19and you eat the crops that grow there, you must set some aside as a sacred offering to the LORD. | 19and you eat some of the food of the land, you must offer up a raised offering to the LORD. |
| 20Present a cake from the first of the flour you grind, and set it aside as a sacred offering, as you do with the first grain from the threshing floor. | 20You must offer up a cake of the first of your finely ground flour as a raised offering; as you offer the raised offering of the threshing floor, so you must offer it up. |
| 21Throughout the generations to come, you are to present a sacred offering to the LORD each year from the first of your ground flour. | 21You must give to the LORD some of the first of your finely ground flour as a raised offering in your future generations. |
| 22“But suppose you unintentionally fail to carry out all these commands that the LORD has given you through Moses. | 22"'If you sin unintentionally and do not observe all these commandments that the LORD has spoken to Moses-- |
| 23And suppose your descendants in the future fail to do everything the LORD has commanded through Moses. | 23all that the LORD has commanded you by the authority of Moses, from the day that the LORD commanded Moses and continuing through your future generations-- |
| 24If the mistake was made unintentionally, and the community was unaware of it, the whole community must present a young bull for a burnt offering as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. It must be offered along with its prescribed grain offering and liquid offering and with one male goat for a sin offering. | 24then if anything is done unintentionally without the knowledge of the community, the whole community must prepare one young bull for a burnt offering--for a pleasing aroma to the LORD--along with its grain offering and its customary drink offering, and one male goat for a purification offering. |
| 25With it the priest will purify the whole community of Israel, making them right with the LORD, and they will be forgiven. For it was an unintentional sin, and they have corrected it with their offerings to the LORD—the special gift and the sin offering. | 25And the priest is to make atonement for the whole community of the Israelites, and they will be forgiven, because it was unintentional and they have brought their offering, an offering made by fire to the LORD, and their purification offering before the LORD, for their unintentional offense. |
| 26The whole community of Israel will be forgiven, including the foreigners living among you, for all the people were involved in the sin. | 26And the whole community of the Israelites and the resident foreigner who lives among them will be forgiven, since all the people were involved in the unintentional offense. |
| 27“If one individual commits an unintentional sin, the guilty person must bring a one-year-old female goat for a sin offering. | 27"'If any person sins unintentionally, then he must bring a yearling female goat for a purification offering. |
| 28The priest will sacrifice it to purify the guilty person before the LORD, and that person will be forgiven. | 28And the priest must make atonement for the person who sins unintentionally--when he sins unintentionally before the LORD--to make atonement for him, and he will be forgiven. |
| 29These same instructions apply both to native-born Israelites and to the foreigners living among you. | 29You must have one law for the person who sins unintentionally, both for the native-born among the Israelites and for the resident foreigner who lives among them. |
| 30“But those who brazenly violate the LORD’s will, whether native-born Israelites or foreigners, have blasphemed the LORD, and they must be cut off from the community. | 30"'But the person who acts defiantly, whether native-born or a resident foreigner, insults the LORD. That person must be cut off from among his people. |
| 31Since they have treated the LORD’s word with contempt and deliberately disobeyed his command, they must be completely cut off and suffer the punishment for their guilt.” Penalty for Breaking the Sabbath | 31Because he has despised the word of the LORD and has broken his commandment, that person must be completely cut off. His iniquity will be on him.'" |
| 32One day while the people of Israel were in the wilderness, they discovered a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day. | 32When the Israelites were in the wilderness they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day. |
| 33The people who found him doing this took him before Moses, Aaron, and the rest of the community. | 33Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and to the whole community. |
| 34They held him in custody because they did not know what to do with him. | 34They put him in custody, because there was no clear instruction about what should be done to him. |
| 35Then the LORD said to Moses, “The man must be put to death! The whole community must stone him outside the camp.” | 35Then the LORD said to Moses, "The man must surely be put to death; the whole community must stone him with stones outside the camp." |
| 36So the whole community took the man outside the camp and stoned him to death, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. Tassels on Clothing | 36So the whole community took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, just as the LORD commanded Moses. |
| 37Then the LORD said to Moses, | 37The LORD spoke to Moses: |
| 38“Give the following instructions to the people of Israel: Throughout the generations to come you must make tassels for the hems of your clothing and attach them with a blue cord. | 38"Speak to the Israelites and tell them to make tassels for themselves on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and put a blue thread on the tassel of the corners. |
| 39When you see the tassels, you will remember and obey all the commands of the LORD instead of following your own desires and defiling yourselves, as you are prone to do. | 39You must have this tassel so that you may look at it and remember all the commandments of the LORD and obey them and so that you do not follow after your own heart and your own eyes that lead you to unfaithfulness. |
| 40The tassels will help you remember that you must obey all my commands and be holy to your God. | 40Thus you will remember and obey all my commandments and be holy to your God. |
| 41I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt that I might be your God. I am the LORD your God!” | 41I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD your God." |
