New Living Translation | NET Bible |
Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. | 1Now very early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been moved away from the entrance. |
She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, “They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” | 2So she went running to Simon Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" |
Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb. | 3Then Peter and the other disciple set out to go to the tomb. |
They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. | 4The two were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and reached the tomb first. |
He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn’t go in. | 5He bent down and saw the strips of linen cloth lying there, but he did not go in. |
Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, | 6Then Simon Peter, who had been following him, arrived and went right into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen cloth lying there, |
while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings. | 7and the face cloth, which had been around Jesus' head, not lying with the strips of linen cloth but rolled up in a place by itself. |
Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed— | 8Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, came in, and he saw and believed. |
for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead. | 9(For they did not yet understand the scripture that Jesus must rise from the dead.) |
Then they went home. Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene | 10So the disciples went back to their homes. |
Mary was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she wept, she stooped and looked in. | 11But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. As she wept, she bent down and looked into the tomb. |
She saw two white-robed angels, one sitting at the head and the other at the foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been lying. | 12And she saw two angels in white sitting where Jesus' body had been lying, one at the head and one at the feet. |
“Dear woman, why are you crying?” the angels asked her. “Because they have taken away my Lord,” she replied, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” | 13They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" Mary replied, "They have taken my Lord away, and I do not know where they have put him!" |
She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him. | 14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. |
“Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.” | 15Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?" Because she thought he was the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him." |
“Mary!” Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”). | 16Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Aramaic, "Rabboni" (which means Teacher). |
“Don’t cling to me,” Jesus said, “for I haven’t yet ascended to the Father. But go find my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” | 17Jesus replied, "Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father. Go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" |
Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, “I have seen the Lord!” Then she gave them his message. Jesus Appears to His Disciples | 18Mary Magdalene came and informed the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them what Jesus had said to her. |
That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. | 19On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the disciples had gathered together and locked the doors of the place because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." |
As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! | 20When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. |
Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” | 21So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, I also send you." |
Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. | 22And after he said this, he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. |
If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” Jesus Appears to Thomas | 23If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins, they are retained." |
One of the twelve disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the others when Jesus came. | 24Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. |
They told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.” | 25The other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he replied, "Unless I see the wounds from the nails in his hands, and put my finger into the wounds from the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe it!" |
Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. | 26Eight days later the disciples were again together in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" |
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” | 27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and examine my hands. Extend your hand and put it into my side. Do not continue in your unbelief, but believe." |
“My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed. | 28Thomas replied to him, "My Lord and my God!" |
Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” Purpose of the Book | 29Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are the people who have not seen and yet have believed." |
The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. | 30Now Jesus performed many other miraculous signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not recorded in this book. |
But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name. | 31But these are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. |
