“Be careful to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then you will live and multiply, and you will enter and occupy the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors.1You must keep carefully all these commandments I am giving you today so that you may live, increase in number, and go in and occupy the land that the LORD promised to your ancestors.
Remember how the LORD your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands.2Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these forty years through the desert so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not.
Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.3So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna. He did this to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread alone, but also by everything that comes from the LORD's mouth.
For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t blister or swell.4Your clothing did not wear out nor did your feet swell all these forty years.
Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the LORD your God disciplines you for your own good.5Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child, the LORD your God disciplines you.
“So obey the commands of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and fearing him.6So you must keep his commandments, live according to his standards, and revere him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land of flowing streams and pools of water, with fountains and springs that gush out in the valleys and hills.7For the LORD your God is bringing you to a good land, a land of brooks, springs, and fountains flowing forth in valleys and hills,
It is a land of wheat and barley; of grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates; of olive oil and honey.8a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, of olive trees and honey,
It is a land where food is plentiful and nothing is lacking. It is a land where iron is as common as stone, and copper is abundant in the hills.9a land where you may eat food in plenty and find no lack of anything, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you can mine copper.
When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.10You will eat your fill and then praise the LORD your God because of the good land he has given you.
“But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the LORD your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today.11Be sure you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today.
For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in,12When you eat your fill, when you build and occupy good houses,
and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful!13when your cattle and flocks increase, when you have plenty of silver and gold, and when you have abundance of everything,
Do not become proud at that time and forget the LORD your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.14be sure you do not feel self-important and forget the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery,
Do not forget that he led you through the great and terrifying wilderness with its poisonous snakes and scorpions, where it was so hot and dry. He gave you water from the rock!15and who brought you through the great, fearful desert of venomous serpents and scorpions, an arid place with no water. He made water flow from a flint rock and
He fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good.16fed you in the desert with manna (which your ancestors had never before known) so that he might by humbling you test you and eventually bring good to you.
He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’17Be careful not to say, "My own ability and skill have gotten me this wealth."
Remember the LORD your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath.18You must remember the LORD your God, for he is the one who gives ability to get wealth; if you do this he will confirm his covenant that he made by oath to your ancestors, even as he has to this day.
“But I assure you of this: If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods, worshiping and bowing down to them, you will certainly be destroyed.19Now if you forget the LORD your God at all and follow other gods, worshiping and prostrating yourselves before them, I testify to you today that you will surely be annihilated.
Just as the LORD has destroyed other nations in your path, you also will be destroyed if you refuse to obey the LORD your God.20Just like the nations the LORD is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you because you would not obey him.
