| 1Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen to earth from the sky, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. | 1And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. |
| 2When he opened it, smoke poured out as though from a huge furnace, and the sunlight and air turned dark from the smoke. | 2He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. |
| 3Then locusts came from the smoke and descended on the earth, and they were given power to sting like scorpions. | 3Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth. |

| 12The first terror is past, but look, two more terrors are coming! The Sixth Trumpet Brings the Second Terror | 12The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still to come. |

| 15Then the four angels who had been prepared for this hour and day and month and year were turned loose to kill one-third of all the people on earth. | 15So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released to kill a third of mankind. |
| 16I heard the size of their army, which was 200 million mounted troops. | 16The number of mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand; I heard their number. |
| 17And in my vision, I saw the horses and the riders sitting on them. The riders wore armor that was fiery red and dark blue and yellow. The horses had heads like lions, and fire and smoke and burning sulfur billowed from their mouths. | 17And this is how I saw the horses in my vision and those who rode them: they wore breastplates the color of fire and of sapphire and of sulfur, and the heads of the horses were like lions’ heads, and fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths. |
| 18One-third of all the people on earth were killed by these three plagues—by the fire and smoke and burning sulfur that came from the mouths of the horses. | 18By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. |
| 19Their power was in their mouths and in their tails. For their tails had heads like snakes, with the power to injure people. | 19For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound. |
| 20But the people who did not die in these plagues still refused to repent of their evil deeds and turn to God. They continued to worship demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—idols that can neither see nor hear nor walk! | 20The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, |
| 21And they did not repent of their murders or their witchcraft or their sexual immorality or their thefts. | 21nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts. |
