| 1This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. I have been sent out to tell others about the life he has promised through faith in Christ Jesus. | 1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God's will, for the sake of the promise of life in Christ Jesus: |
| 2I am writing to Timothy, my dear son. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace. Encouragement to Be Faithful | 2To Timothy, my dearly loved son. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. |
| 3Timothy, I thank God for you—the God I serve with a clear conscience, just as my ancestors did. Night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. | 3I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, when I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day. |
| 4I long to see you again, for I remember your tears as we parted. And I will be filled with joy when we are together again. | 4Remembering your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. |
| 5I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. | 5I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and now, I am convinced, is in you also. |
| 6This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. | 6Therefore, I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands. |
| 7For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. | 7For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment. |
| 8So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either, even though I’m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News. | 8So don't be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, or of me his prisoner. Instead, share in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God. |
| 9For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. | 9He has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began. |
| 10And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News. | 10This has now been made evident through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who has abolished death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. |
| 11And God chose me to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of this Good News. | 11For this gospel I was appointed a herald, apostle, and teacher, |
| 12That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return. | 12and that is why I suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day. |
| 13Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. | 13Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. |
| 14Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you. | 14Guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit who lives in us. |
| 15As you know, everyone from the province of Asia has deserted me—even Phygelus and Hermogenes. | 15You know that all those in the province of Asia have deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. |
| 16May the Lord show special kindness to Onesiphorus and all his family because he often visited and encouraged me. He was never ashamed of me because I was in chains. | 16May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. |
| 17When he came to Rome, he searched everywhere until he found me. | 17On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he diligently searched for me and found me. |
| 18May the Lord show him special kindness on the day of Christ’s return. And you know very well how helpful he was in Ephesus. | 18May the Lord grant that he obtain mercy from him on that day. You know very well how much he ministered at Ephesus. |
