Then Bildad the Shuhite replied: | 1Then Bildad the Shuhite replied: |
“How long before you stop talking? Speak sense if you want us to answer! | 2“How long until you end these speeches? Show some sense, and then we can talk. |
Do you think we are mere animals? Do you think we are stupid? | 3Why are we regarded as cattle, as stupid in your sight? |
You may tear out your hair in anger, but will that destroy the earth? Will it make the rocks tremble? | 4You who tear yourself in anger—should the earth be forsaken on your account, or the rocks be moved from their place? |
“Surely the light of the wicked will be snuffed out. The sparks of their fire will not glow. | 5Indeed, the lamp of the wicked is extinguished; the flame of his fire does not glow. |
The light in their tent will grow dark. The lamp hanging above them will be quenched. | 6The light in his tent grows dark, and the lamp beside him goes out. |
The confident stride of the wicked will be shortened. Their own schemes will be their downfall. | 7His vigorous stride is shortened, and his own schemes trip him up. |
The wicked walk into a net. They fall into a pit. | 8For his own feet lead him into a net, and he wanders into its mesh. |
A trap grabs them by the heel. A snare holds them tight. | 9A trap seizes his heel; a snare grips him. |
A noose lies hidden on the ground. A rope is stretched across their path. | 10A noose is hidden in the ground, and a trap lies in his path. |
“Terrors surround the wicked and trouble them at every step. | 11Terrors frighten him on every side and harass his every step. |
Hunger depletes their strength, and calamity waits for them to stumble. | 12His strength is depleted, and calamity is ready at his side. |
Disease eats their skin; death devours their limbs. | 13It devours patches of his skin; the firstborn of death devours his limbs. |
They are torn from the security of their homes and are brought down to the king of terrors. | 14He is torn from the shelter of his tent and is marched off to the king of terrors. |
The homes of the wicked will burn down; burning sulfur rains on their houses. | 15Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur rains down on his dwelling. |
Their roots will dry up, and their branches will wither. | 16The roots beneath him dry up, and the branches above him wither away. |
All memory of their existence will fade from the earth; no one will remember their names. | 17The memory of him perishes from the earth, and he has no name in the land. |
They will be thrust from light into darkness, driven from the world. | 18He is driven from light into darkness and is chased from the inhabited world. |
They will have neither children nor grandchildren, nor any survivor in the place where they lived. | 19He has no offspring or posterity among his people, no survivor where he once lived. |
People in the west are appalled at their fate; people in the east are horrified. | 20Those in the west are appalled at his fate, while those in the east tremble in horror. |
They will say, ‘This was the home of a wicked person, the place of one who rejected God.’” | 21Surely such is the dwelling of the wicked and the place of one who does not know God.” |
