The Birth of Jesus the Messiah |
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. | 18This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. |
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. | 19Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. |
But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. | 20As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. |
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” | 21And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” |
So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: | 22All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: |
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” | 23“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” |
Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, | 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. |
and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS. | 25But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus. |
