| 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. | 18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. |
| 19Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. | 19Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to divorce her quietly. |
| 20But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. | 20But after he had pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |
| 21And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” | 21She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” |
| 22So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: | 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: |
| 23“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” | 23“Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”). |
| 24Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, | 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and embraced Mary as his wife. |
| 25and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS. | 25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus. |
