So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations. | 17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations. |
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. | 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. |
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. | 19And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. |
But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. | 20But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. |
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” | 21"She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." |
So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: | 22Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: |
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” | 23"BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US." |
Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, | 24And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, |
and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS. | 25but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. |
