New King James Version | New Living Translation |
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Depart and go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your descendants I will give it.’ | 1The LORD said to Moses, “Get going, you and the people you brought up from the land of Egypt. Go up to the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I told them, ‘I will give this land to your descendants.’ |
And I will send My Angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanite and the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. | 2And I will send an angel before you to drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. |
Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.” | 3Go up to this land that flows with milk and honey. But I will not travel among you, for you are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I did, I would surely destroy you along the way.” |
And when the people heard this bad news, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. | 4When the people heard these stern words, they went into mourning and stopped wearing their jewelry and fine clothes. |
For the LORD had said to Moses, “Say to the children of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. I could come up into your midst in one moment and consume you. Now therefore, take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do to you.’ ” | 5For the LORD had told Moses to tell them, “You are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I were to travel with you for even a moment, I would destroy you. Remove your jewelry and fine clothes while I decide what to do with you.” |
So the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by Mount Horeb. | 6So from the time they left Mount Sinai, the Israelites wore no more jewelry or fine clothes. |
Moses took his tent and pitched it outside the camp, far from the camp, and called it the tabernacle of meeting. And it came to pass that everyone who sought the LORD went out to the tabernacle of meeting which was outside the camp. | 7It was Moses’ practice to take the Tent of Meeting and set it up some distance from the camp. Everyone who wanted to make a request of the LORD would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp. |
So it was, whenever Moses went out to the tabernacle, that all the people rose, and each man stood at his tent door and watched Moses until he had gone into the tabernacle. | 8Whenever Moses went out to the Tent of Meeting, all the people would get up and stand in the entrances of their own tents. They would all watch Moses until he disappeared inside. |
And it came to pass, when Moses entered the tabernacle, that the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the LORD talked with Moses. | 9As he went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and hover at its entrance while the LORD spoke with Moses. |
All the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the tabernacle door, and all the people rose and worshiped, each man in his tent door. | 10When the people saw the cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, they would stand and bow down in front of their own tents. |
So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle. | 11Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting. Moses Sees the LORD’s Glory |
Then Moses said to the LORD, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’ | 12One day Moses said to the LORD, “You have been telling me, ‘Take these people up to the Promised Land.’ But you haven’t told me whom you will send with me. You have told me, ‘I know you by name, and I look favorably on you.’ |
Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.” | 13If it is true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor. And remember that this nation is your very own people.” |
And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” | 14The LORD replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.” |
Then he said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. | 15Then Moses said, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. |
For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, except You go with us? So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.” | 16How will anyone know that you look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.” |
So the LORD said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.” | 17The LORD replied to Moses, “I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.” |
And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.” | 18Moses responded, “Then show me your glorious presence.” |
Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” | 19The LORD replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose. |
But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” | 20But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live.” |
And the LORD said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. | 21The LORD continued, “Look, stand near me on this rock. |
So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. | 22As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. |
Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.” | 23Then I will remove my hand and let you see me from behind. But my face will not be seen.” |
