New King James Version | New International Version |
Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said: | 1The LORD said to Job: |
“Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him? He who rebukes God, let him answer it.” | 2"Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!" |
Then Job answered the LORD and said: | 3Then Job answered the LORD: |
“Behold, I am vile; What shall I answer You? I lay my hand over my mouth. | 4"I am unworthy--how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth. |
Once I have spoken, but I will not answer; Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.” | 5I spoke once, but I have no answer-- twice, but I will say no more." |
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: | 6Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm: |
“Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me: | 7"Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. |
“Would you indeed annul My judgment? Would you condemn Me that you may be justified? | 8"Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself? |
Have you an arm like God? Or can you thunder with a voice like His? | 9Do you have an arm like God's, and can your voice thunder like his? |
Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, And array yourself with glory and beauty. | 10Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty. |
Disperse the rage of your wrath; Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him. | 11Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at all who are proud and bring them low, |
Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him low; Tread down the wicked in their place. | 12look at all who are proud and humble them, crush the wicked where they stand. |
Hide them in the dust together, Bind their faces in hidden darkness. | 13Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave. |
Then I will also confess to you That your own right hand can save you. | 14Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you. |
“Look now at the behemoth, which I made along with you; He eats grass like an ox. | 15"Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox. |
See now, his strength is in his hips, And his power is in his stomach muscles. | 16What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly! |
He moves his tail like a cedar; The sinews of his thighs are tightly knit. | 17Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit. |
His bones are like beams of bronze, His ribs like bars of iron. | 18Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron. |
He is the first of the ways of God; Only He who made him can bring near His sword. | 19It ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword. |
Surely the mountains yield food for him, And all the beasts of the field play there. | 20The hills bring it their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby. |
He lies under the lotus trees, In a covert of reeds and marsh. | 21Under the lotus plants it lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh. |
The lotus trees cover him with their shade; The willows by the brook surround him. | 22The lotuses conceal it in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround it. |
Indeed the river may rage, Yet he is not disturbed; He is confident, though the Jordan gushes into his mouth, | 23A raging river does not alarm it; it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth. |
Though he takes it in his eyes, Or one pierces his nose with a snare. | 24Can anyone capture it by the eyes, or trap it and pierce its nose? |
