Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said: | 1And the LORD said to Job: |
“Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him? He who rebukes God, let him answer it.” | 2“Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.” |
Then Job answered the LORD and said: | 3Then Job answered the LORD and said: |
“Behold, I am vile; What shall I answer You? I lay my hand over my mouth. | 4“Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. |
Once I have spoken, but I will not answer; Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.” | 5I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.” |
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: | 6Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: |
“Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me: | 7“Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. |
“Would you indeed annul My judgment? Would you condemn Me that you may be justified? | 8Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right? |
Have you an arm like God? Or can you thunder with a voice like His? | 9Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his? |
Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, And array yourself with glory and beauty. | 10“Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor. |
Disperse the rage of your wrath; Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him. | 11Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him. |
Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him low; Tread down the wicked in their place. | 12Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand. |
Hide them in the dust together, Bind their faces in hidden darkness. | 13Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below. |
Then I will also confess to you That your own right hand can save you. | 14Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you. |
“Look now at the behemoth, which I made along with you; He eats grass like an ox. | 15“Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox. |
See now, his strength is in his hips, And his power is in his stomach muscles. | 16Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly. |
He moves his tail like a cedar; The sinews of his thighs are tightly knit. | 17He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. |
His bones are like beams of bronze, His ribs like bars of iron. | 18His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron. |
He is the first of the ways of God; Only He who made him can bring near His sword. | 19“He is the first of the works of God; let him who made him bring near his sword! |
Surely the mountains yield food for him, And all the beasts of the field play there. | 20For the mountains yield food for him where all the wild beasts play. |
He lies under the lotus trees, In a covert of reeds and marsh. | 21Under the lotus plants he lies, in the shelter of the reeds and in the marsh. |
The lotus trees cover him with their shade; The willows by the brook surround him. | 22For his shade the lotus trees cover him; the willows of the brook surround him. |
Indeed the river may rage, Yet he is not disturbed; He is confident, though the Jordan gushes into his mouth, | 23Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened; he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth. |
Though he takes it in his eyes, Or one pierces his nose with a snare. | 24Can one take him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a snare? |
