Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”1Then God said to Jacob, "Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau."
And Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments.2So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.
Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me in the way which I have gone.”3Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone."
So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.4So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem.
And they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.5Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.
So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him.6Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.
And he built an altar there and called the place El Bethel, because there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.7There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel, because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.
Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called Allon Bachuth.8Now Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died and was buried under the oak outside Bethel. So it was named Allon Bakuth.
Then God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and blessed him.9After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him.
And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel.10God said to him, "Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel." So he named him Israel.
Also God said to him: “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body.11And God said to him, "I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.
The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.”12The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you."
Then God went up from him in the place where He talked with him.13Then God went up from him at the place where he had talked with him.
So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it.14Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it.
And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.15Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.
Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor.16Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty.
Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear; you will have this son also.”17And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her, "Don't despair, for you have another son."
And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin.18As she breathed her last--for she was dying--she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin.
So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).19So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.20Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day that pillar marks Rachel's tomb.
Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.21Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.
And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:22While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father's concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard of it. Jacob had twelve sons:
the sons of Leah were Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;23The sons of Leah: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.
the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin;24The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali;25The sons of Rachel's servant Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali.
and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.26The sons of Leah's servant Zilpah: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.
Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, or Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt.27Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre, near Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.
Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.28Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years.
So Isaac breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.29Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
