New King James Version | NET Bible |
Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit. | 1Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the abyss. |
And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. | 2He opened the shaft of the abyss and smoke rose out of it like smoke from a giant furnace. The sun and the air were darkened with smoke from the shaft. |
Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. | 3Then out of the smoke came locusts onto the earth, and they were given power like that of the scorpions of the earth. |
They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. | 4They were told not to damage the grass of the earth, or any green plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their forehead. |
And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. | 5The locusts were not given permission to kill them, but only to torture them for five months, and their torture was like that of a scorpion when it stings a person. |
In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them. | 6In those days people will seek death, but will not be able to find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them. |
The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were crowns of something like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men. | 7Now the locusts looked like horses equipped for battle. On their heads were something like crowns similar to gold, and their faces looked like men's faces. |
They had hair like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth. | 8They had hair like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth. |
And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle. | 9They had breastplates like iron breastplates, and the sound of their wings was like the noise of many horse-drawn chariots charging into battle. |
They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months. | 10They have tails and stingers like scorpions, and their ability to injure people for five months is in their tails. |
And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon. | 11They have as king over them the angel of the abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon. |
One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things. | 12The first woe has passed, but two woes are still coming after these things! |
Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, | 13Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a single voice coming from the horns on the golden altar that is before God, |
saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” | 14saying to the sixth angel, the one holding the trumpet, "Set free the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates!" |
So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. | 15Then the four angels who had been prepared for this hour, day, month, and year were set free to kill a third of humanity. |
Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. | 16The number of soldiers on horseback was two hundred million; I heard their number. |
And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. | 17Now this is what the horses and their riders looked like in my vision: The riders had breastplates that were fiery red, dark blue, and sulfurous yellow in color. The heads of the horses looked like lions' heads, and fire, smoke, and sulfur came out of their mouths. |
By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. | 18A third of humanity was killed by these three plagues, that is, by the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur that came out of their mouths. |
For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm. | 19For the power of the horses resides in their mouths and in their tails, because their tails are like snakes, having heads that inflict injuries. |
But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. | 20The rest of humanity, who had not been killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, so that they did not stop worshiping demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood--idols that cannot see or hear or walk about. |
And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts. | 21Furthermore, they did not repent of their murders, of their magic spells, of their sexual immorality, or of their stealing. |
