New King James Version | NET Bible |
To the Chief Musician. Set to “The Silent Dove in Distant Lands.” A Michtam of David when the Philistines captured him in Gath. Be merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up; Fighting all day he oppresses me. | 1For the music director; according to the yonath-elem-rechovim style; a prayer of David, written when the Philistines captured him in Gath. Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me! All day long hostile enemies are tormenting me. |
My enemies would hound me all day, For there are many who fight against me, O Most High. | 2Those who anticipate my defeat attack me all day long. Indeed, many are fighting against me, O Exalted One. |
Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. | 3When I am afraid, I trust in you. |
In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me? | 4In God--I boast in his promise--in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me? |
All day they twist my words; All their thoughts are against me for evil. | 5All day long they cause me trouble; they make a habit of plotting my demise. |
They gather together, They hide, they mark my steps, When they lie in wait for my life. | 6They stalk and lurk; they watch my every step, as they prepare to take my life. |
Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, O God! | 7Because they are bent on violence, do not let them escape! In your anger bring down the nations, O God! |
You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book? | 8You keep track of my misery. Put my tears in your leather container! Are they not recorded in your scroll? |
When I cry out to You, Then my enemies will turn back; This I know, because God is for me. | 9My enemies will turn back when I cry out to you for help; I know that God is on my side. |
In God (I will praise His word), In the LORD (I will praise His word), | 10In God--I boast in his promise--in the LORD--I boast in his promise-- |
In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? | 11in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me? |
Vows made to You are binding upon me, O God; I will render praises to You, | 12I am obligated to fulfill the vows I made to you, O God; I will give you the thank-offerings you deserve, |
For You have delivered my soul from death. Have You not kept my feet from falling, That I may walk before God In the light of the living? | 13when you deliver my life from death. You keep my feet from stumbling, so that I might serve God as I enjoy life. |
